Unhappy Help Please: "Cam Journals" location??

I took my heads to the machine shop and they took off the "cam journals" and now I don’t know where they go?? Thank God I do have the left and right sides separate, but never the less I don’t know where they go? All I know is they're numbered 1-8 and have an arrow.

Questions:

1) Do I start 1-4 on the intake or the exhaust?

2) From the front of the engine to the back?

3) Do I put the arrows pointing to the front of the engine?

Thanks.

I'd say you should call the shop and ask them how they marked them when they took them off.

Concur: Call or visit the shop. If he doesn't get to this thread; "Brutal" will know. This is just up his alley. You can PM him.

I think you need to clear up some terminology first.

What do YOU mean by journals? Are youi referring to the bearing caps for the cam bearings or what?

If it's the bearing caps then they should be factory labeled with arrows on them pointing towards the front of the engine.

I spent 11 hours yesterday updating the tensioners and chain guides on a 2001 4L V8. Oh my aching back. We had to pull the exhaust cap caps and pop the cam up a bit to free the tensioner. They were clearly marked.

Can you please take a look at them and let me know how they go?

Thanks,
JG

Unfortunately for you we finished about 8:30 last light and the car is closed up.
It's also not my car.

It should be in the service manual. We were using the latest version and not JTIS but I would assume it's in JTIS as well. That's a free download in a few locations. Dig a bit.

I do have the JTIS but it won't work in my computer. I need to really get this done ASAP. If anyone has this info then please share it!

Thanks

Or the few $$$ for jag's own TOPIx site. Download a lot that you think you might need, ready for the day.

Its not on topix or alldata, i already looked for him sunday. But like beauregard said i believe thats correct. Arrows always point forward and #1 cap is the front intake cam cap the going back and then coming back to the front on the exhaust and going back numerically

I can confirm this. My 2001 4.0L left cover is open right now and 0-4 on the intake side and 5-9 on the exhaust side, front to back.

Yes I got it, I went to the local Jag dealer and the tech allowed me to see an open engine. So it is like Brutal said, #1 is on the intake and so on; with the arrows pointing to the front of the engine. But as a side note the first one is number Zero 0 and the first one on the exhaust side is 5 and is a total of 10 caps. 0-9

Next time take notes and a ton of photos. They are so essential. Especially when the manuals contain errors. They ALL do.

Glad to hear you're on your way.
