Default Help! Stype won't start

Hello folks,
Just put my key in ignition and nothing!
A few relays click under the bonnet and all the dash lights up as normal but nothing from the starter so the engine won't turn over.
No problems previously so I'm a bit stumped! Could the starter be faulty?
Any help advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks neil .
Sorry forgot to say its a 2000 3 litre s type

Hi Neil,
Has the car been doing short journeys?. If so I would check, with a meter, the condition of the battery to start with.

Look on top of the negative post for a 4 numbered code, that will tell you how old it is.

You could also look at the ground points in the engine bay.

Hope this helps,

Hello jim,
Thanks for your reply.
I don't think it's the battery as the starter doesn't even try to turn the engine and headlights remain bright if I switch them on whilst trying to crank the engine,I've just done a bit of research and it seems there's a 500 a mega fuse in the boot so I'll take a look at that.the car is currently stranded about 1 mile away so ill have to take a walk and fingers crossed!

Sounds like a flat battery, check what the pats light on the top of the dash does when ignition on.

Try removing the fuse for the security system and then try again. Might just get you going.

I've disconnected the battery and left it off for an hour but no joy! Immobiliser is still active,I think that's where the problem lies

Try locking then unlocking the car with the fob then starting. If that doesn't work try locking and unlocking with key then try starting it within a couple of seconds of opening the door before the alarm sounds.

I'd that doesn't work do you have another key and or fob to try.

Also count the number and pattern of pats light flashes, this will help determine what's wrong.

I've tried another key and that was just the same,no response from the car.
I have never used a Key fob, only the key so I'm stumped!
Red led flashing on the dash all the time so it must be an immobiliser issue.

Shift the car into "N" and try to start...

Check out the PATS info posted before on here as it explains lots and you want to step through all the possibilities. Nothing you've said seems to rule out the battery.

If the red light is flashing it indicates that the security system is armed and it appears it is not turning off and this could be for several reasons. You already tested other keys so whatever is taking place is not reading the key, it could be the exciter ring, security module or something else. I would suggest you count the flashes a police666 suggested in post #10 and see what he comes up with unless you want to turn it over to Jaguar to fix it….

Thanks for your replies guys, this is the current situation.
Pats light comes on when key inserted then goes out,so as I understand this has gone through its check list and reported no errors .
Turn the key and apart from a couple of relay clicks there is nothing.
It's as if the car is in gear and needs putting into n or p but this makes no difference.
I've changed the starter relay but still no joy.im leaning towards the starter motor or neutral safety switch.the car is currently stuck a mile away from my house so I need to get it recovered then start looking at things ,any pointers with the info I've given is greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

95% it's a flat battery.
Most other things cause sounds or messages.
Water in the boot, maybe?

Have you checked for power at the starter while the key is in the start position.
