Default I had a bright idea....that didn't work

Yesterday my wife called from the grocery store. She'd unlocked the trunk, set her keys down, loaded the groceries and then....locked the keys in the trunk. Help.

I started the 20 mile drive and about 5 miles down the road remembered that I hadn't brought the keys to the Jag. I'd picked up my wallet and truck keys and headed out. Duh! Anyway, U turn and back to the house I go.

As I'm setting out on the second trip to rescue my fair damsel I had a bright idea. I called Joan and told her to hold her phone out to the car. I then pressed the unlock button for the trunk. No such luck.

It was worth a try but...why didn't it work? Do phones transmit such a narrow bandwidth that the signal simply didn't pass through or is it some other explanation. I have no idea where she held her phone when I tried this.

So....on I drove. At least I got to listen to Click and Clack.

Phones transmit a fraction of the audible frequencies. The remote uses others.

You should have called Click and Clack and asked them?
