So guys, there was a slight squeal from joycesjags rear brakes. I figured ok coming up on 60k must be the pads. Well after removing the wheels and "inspecting" the pads, they looked to be in really good shape. So being as **** as I am, I decided to have the rotors turned, while they were being turned, I came home to "clean" the calipers, I broke out the paint instead and did some touch up. I moved on to the fronts as well.

Looks REALLY nice when I put everything back together! Went for a drive this morn and mannnnnnn, I "F'd" something up. First the brake pedal is very soft and there is a clunking sound (and felt through the pedal) when stomped on.

Being Easter Sunday (playing a very hungover Easter bunny) I did not even attempt of pulling the wheels back off and peeking at my so called work from yesterday. Thanks for Joyce having the day off tomorrow, I will go back and see what the heck I did.

Lesson learned, don't share a gallon of Absolute with sister inlaw and work on vehicle!

Keep us posted on how one can screw up the brakes from that end....we already got the gouge from another member on how to do it through the reservoir, bless his heart....

I ordered pads for the XJ this weekend....looked too labor-intensive to just pull the calipers and have a look:



Looks like it's "fun with twisty wires" for me in some weeks....but I won't start that until AFTER I find my "tuit" - yeah - - the ROUND one....and won't start searching for it since we find my daughter's keys

 

All Colonel Klink needs to add to your pic is some barbs to that wire......sheesh what is up with that??!!!! Chocolates will be needed

I was shocked too...looks that way on both sides! Fronts are not wired (nor drilled) though. I gotta consult Motorcarman. Wonder what kind of tool I need to put 'em back that way? "Thru-the-caliper" pics look like I have plenty of pad left, front and rear...so I'll get my pads delivered and think on it a good while before I bite it off.

Anxious to know what could be causing the clunk in yours (Joyce's)?

Safety wire ... keeps the bolts from winding out.

Another excuse for tool freaks to buy another tool because there is a special type of pliers that does the twisting for you while you just pull the pliers back.

Looks very well done. Notice the wire passing through the bight of the doubled up safety wire.

... or you can twist the wire with plain old pliers gripping the two cut ends of the wires. Gripping the wire mid run is not recommended in case you nick the wire.

 

They do look nice. Like the vintage looking center caps. What'd u do with the old ones?

 

aj, 2 of the factory green leaper caps are in good condition, the other 2 are worn. Jeff member JOsworth noticed I needed "new" caps and sent me the pictured ones after he recently sold his S Type.

I have them here if you want them, the greenies....

I hate safety wire. I used to gun a Bushmaster M242 Chain Gun in the military and that thing was loaded with it every single bolt was safety wired. Man was that thing a pain to do anything on.
I venture to guess that the previous owner may have lost a caliper bolt and really didnt want to go through that again so took matters into his own hand. Wish I had snagged some of the tools I had while in I'd hook you up with them for when you are done. Here is what you will end up needing to make them look the same.

Rick, Let us know what is causing it.... I think I did something similar to the 300's brakes... Took them apart and reassembled them to try to get rid of a squeak now I think I have a clunk that sounds like a suspension issue... My plan is to just replace the brakes...

BTW.. To those that are interested... Those center caps were released on the 2009 (?) Portfolio edition XKR... A Co-Worker's Father In-Law has the one convertible that Jaguar Cleveland got and saw the coupe on the showroom floor. Since Jaguar uses the same center caps I ordered them. Thought the vintage logo fit the vintage look of the S... Glad to see they have a well appreciated home...

Oh, and if you check with the dealer, you will be pleasantly surprised at how in expensive they are..

 

Man it sounds to me like they turned the rotors too much. For the price of new rotors I never have them turned, I just usually replace rotors with pads that way I also have a firm full pedal.

 

The first time I tried to attempt my own brake pad change was the rear drum brake pads on my Triumph Stag. Did the job, all looked good, happy that I had accomplished it on my own. Started backing out the driveway, in the middle of the street; CRUNCH, BANG! blew the diff! Stuck in the middle of the road. I forgot to release/adjust before reassembly and brakes locked in place. Moral of the story? Be very carefull with brakes, and make sure the wheels turn before you drive out!
