Default Ignition coils oem vs aftermarket

I am looking to do the 6 coils on my car. Since I have had the car for nearly 2 years all the coils are different aftermarket coils and it seems to run a bit rough so I figured I would change them along with the plugs. Welsh Jaguar has them online for 29.95 a piece and they are aftermarket, or I can get them though britishparts.co.uk oem for about 35 bucks in USD. I am very weary about aftermarket coils, because in my X300 a few years back I was stalling out every few minutes until I went back and put my oem coils and the car ran fine after that. What would you guys recommend?

A subtle but important distinction, especially since the term "OEM" is is thrown around very loosely these days. Some vendors use the term with utter lack of discretion. Plus changing corporate ownership, multiple global manufacturing plants, and label/badge engineering has made it very difficult to know what you're actually buying.

Anyone who has been thru the wringer with X300 coils (as mentioned in the original post) knows the story all too well. Many are being sold as "OEM" because they come in a Lucas box and have a Lucas label. Fair enough, *technically speaking*, because the original coils used by Jaguar were indeed supplied by Lucas and had a Lucas label.

However, these "OEM" replacements are most certainly not the same Lucas coils originally used by Jaguar when the cars were built. Not genuine. They're much lower quality.... even though they're being sold by the same "Original Equipment Manufacturer".

This problem goes beyond just coils, of course.

Not trying to cast aspersions on any particular vendor, such as SNG Barratt, mind you.

Cheers
DD

Hello, after inputting credit card details you will see 'add message to your order' box where you can input 'jaguar forums' for your discount. This will be deducted once the order is processed. If you prefer please feel free to call us to place an order with the same discount code.

Kind regards

That is an advantage with Barratts as they are an oem distributer in the UK.

Yes, but which "OEM"? Original/genuine, or something else? I sense you didn't catch the meaning of my earlier post. The term "OEM" doesn't really mean or prove or guarantee anything nowadays. Not to me, at least.

Since they've posted in this thread I'd love to hear from Barratt on this issue....but I know I might be putting them on the spot ....and I'm certainly not trying to discredit them or any other vendor. But who better than they can help us understand what's going on in the world of spare parts? I'm sure they can give us the real low-down truth on the issue.

Or any other parts supplier who might care to chime in.

Cheers

To clarify - if I were ordering coils for my car - I would only obtain coils from either Jaguar directly (Jaguar lists their parts as OES) or Ford Motorcraft label. Yes, more expensive but will last.

Sorry, but I have ordered aftermarket coils - from two legitimate Jaguar parts suppliers (I will not disclose) and they spelled disaster. They claimed coils were genuine "Jaguar OES" replacements (even listing them under XR827823 - Jaguar part number for V8 engine) but were crappy rebuilt units from China.

My $0.02 on the topic of which coils I would personally prefer to use in my vehicle.

Hello Doug (and all).

We are happy to comment and/or help with any enquiries regarding the parts we supply, your feedback is critical to us to ensure we are ahead of our game in supplying quality parts at the right prices.

I’ve had a look at the OE (#) version and the genuine Jaguar boxed versions we have on the shelf and can confirm they are both exactly the same.

The lettering for each reads “2W4E-12A366-AD” on the top of the units. They are manufactured in USA to Jaguar specification, as per the packaging. As to who actually manufactures them I am not sure as we purchase through a major distributor in the UK.

We have sold a very high quantity of these over the years and had very few returned under warranty. That said, the aftermarket version of this part we have had similar success with.

If you need any further information or would like to discuss in person please do not hesitate to contact us.
