A lot has changed in car audio since the last post made a dozen years ago in the previous aftermarket radio thread, so allow me please to bring up the subject again, hoping for up-to-date comments.
I recently purchased a 2001 Jaguar S-type 3.0 V6 with 114,000 miles, in good condition. The previous owner modified some stuff and "lost" the CD unit and damaged the cassette unit of the car stereo. He replaced the nav instrument with small screen for a rear camera.
The sound quality is poor.
I thought of replacing the original radio and CD unit, but that would cost more than $200 for used gear on eBay.
So: has anyone recently replaced the original car stereo with a new multi-media unit? I'm looking for features such as:
6.8" or 7" touchscreen display
Android Auto (Wireless)
Built-in Bluetooth
Built-in WiFi
Back-up camera input
Connection to steering wheel controls
Wireless phone calling connection
I've looked at Crutchfield, and it seems such a package would cost almost $400, but I'd have to create a new faceplate to fit around their single-din chassis of the new radio.
ALSO:
For higher quality sound, it seems I need to replace the factory speakers (or maybe the modified factory radio just puts out poor signal), which I understand are 4"x6" in the four doors, and ADD two 6"x9" "woofers" to the rear deck (none exist now, there are holes for 6"x9" and would need some kind of baffle).
What experience have you had in finding the appropriate gear for this car? What experience have you had installing the radio and the speakers? (I'm DIY) What are your warnings about what to watch out for?
You could get a double din unit. That has been done before by someone on here. I’m still using the original “Premium Audio” system in my 2000 3.0 S-type. You will struggle to find a better quality sound without spending quite a lot of money. If I were in your shoes, I would buy a used “Premium Audio” system if you can. The only inconvenience is that you will need to get a bluetooth adapter to plug into your lighter socket, if you want that facility.
For an 01, there are not many options for a touchscreen. A cheap option is to get one of those Bluetooth gadgets that act as a WIFI and FM transmitter. You can hear the speakers from a different source.
If someone here wants the original radio and cd changer send me an pm
Il let you know when i have the radio
I found in the car the original Motorola telephone with jag logo on it

it’s a pioneer avid d3 with an rca to 3.5mm plugged in so the drawer can be closed and no cords visible. Pretty clean install & cd player still works. I mostly run Spotify from the aux cord. It was installed in march 2007 and the car and stereo still going strong quarter million miles later.

If your phone lacks a 3.5mm port you can use a lightning or usb to 3.5mm adapter. Usually $2 and pretty sure audio doesn’t degrade but not 100% sure since my phone has a 3.5mm port.
In past i had radio from pioneer .
The problem with all premium brands is you have to use cards for navi from them
1 high cost
2 after a few years no cards
So im taking a full android so you can put on it what you want i use sygic for navi
