My gear selector stopped being able to select lower gears and only 3rd could be selected. It now struggles to stay in 4th or D. If i push up harder it seems to improve the problem marginally.
Does anyone know the possible cause and how serious a problem it could be. Is likely to be a cable or internal transmission problem

I think it's an auto because he mentioned the D position.

I'd suggest removing the console for a looksee:

Look for debris getting in the way of the shift mechanism. If nothing obvious, disconnect the cable from the side of the shifter assembly. See if the shift lever still binds or if it operates smoothly.

If the shift lever operates smoothly with the cable disconnected, reconnect the cable at the top and disconnect it at the transmission. If the binding returns, the cable was likely at fault. Please note this last step is not 100% conclusive as the cable may be defective but operates smoothly without a load on it.
