Default Key programming 2003 S Type R

Does anyone know how to program or reprogram a key FOB? I called the dealer and they said that they are the only ones that could do it....

I just did it yesterday on my 06 STR with SDD v131.0something. I messed it up for a while but finally got two transponders and two transmitters programed.

The only way to program or reprogram a key fob on a Jaguar S-type is to use the Jaguar software.
However as far as i know SDD will not work on a 2003 car, SDD only works on the 05MY or newer cars.
You will need the older version known as IDS. Also you will not be able to use the later adapters like the Mongoose that work with SDD as these will just come up with an error in IDS, you will have to find one of the earlier adapters that are no longer produced. Sadly this will not be easy.
(IDS software looks for a specific response from the interface that comes from a dedicated IC chip that was built into the interface and these IC's are no longer produced.)

However as my car is an 05MY car and I use SDD I have never had experiance of this myself, so any corrections to the above are most welcome.

As I recall, IDS125 supports other J2534 devices so a Mangoose/Mongoose should be OK to do the job.

Worth reading old posts about this - especially by Motorcarman.

SDD 131 will work for an 03. It will automatically revert to IDS when you enter your VIN. A real Mongoose cable will also work but you'll need to spend the money on a REAL one. I know this from experience with my 03 STR. I have two different knock off Mongoose cables and they only work maybe 15% of the time without error messages plus it takes hours. I've even bricked my original ecm and brought it back with the real Mongoose. I can reprogram my keys and all modules with ease now. If you plan on doing work on your Jag yourself then spending the money on a real Mongoose is worth it.

Yes if the car is too old for SDD you will get a message to wait while the legacy software (IDS) is loaded.
My $40 clone cable works fine and I have programmed keys with it. The big problem is using the correct power supply on the battery at ALL times!
You can't use a battery charger. It does not put out enough clean DC amps. Be SURE your battery indicator in SDD is green before you program any keys!

Here is when I was still trying to use a battery charger and my battery indicator was yellow.

You can read and clear codes but make sure it's green before any programming is done.

Thanks for all the corrections regarding IDS and the cable/adapter.

I use a 30 amp regulated variable voltage power supply when I use SDD.
I think Jaguar recommend a 50 amp power supply.
It needs to be powerful enough to power all the electrical systems on the car with the engine turned off.
If the battery voltage drops during programming it can interrupt the process and destroy the modules. (Or if you are lucky require them to be re-programmed again from scratch.
