Default Liquid in my rear view mirror..

l noticed a few weeks ago that my rear view had liquid sitting inside the rear view mirror.
For some time l thought it was the mirror not adjusted properly but eventually realized it was liquid when l squeezed the mirror and it moved inside.

Has anyone else experienced this? How do you get it out?

Hey Steve,

This is a common problem with the electrochromatic rear view mirrors unfortunately...

There's no way to fix it yourself, the mirror needs replacing. However there is a company that can refurbish the mirrors, but you need to send it off to them.

Have a read here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...acement-17719/ and https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...s-type-113357/

I replaced the mirror in my S-Type with a $25 one from Supercheap Auto because I could not justify the cost/trouble of sending it off to the US for refurbishment.

You won't find many secondhand either, and if you did, no guarantees that you won't have the same issues...

Good information above.

I hate to say it but search "dragons blood" here. Do it soon as you do not want it oozing on to the center console!

What about the wiring? Can you disconnect it?

Yes you can disconnect it, however your automatic lights will now become daytime-running lights, i.e. permanently on when in the auto position (but they turn off when you turn off the car). I just tucked the wire up into the roof lining.

No idea if anyone apart from that company Sybesma's Electronics can fix them...I doubt very much you'll find anyone local...

Accounts2000, you don't want to wait! Get that mirror off and look at the back to see who made it. If it's Gentex, repair may be possible. If it's Donnelly, repair will not be possible, but severe corrosion to anything in your car that liquid touches is a certainty.

If you see one in a scrapyard or on eBay, make sure it's Gentex. I was lucky - I got one for $75 and it was OK, no thanks to the scrapyard vendor who had not even tested it.

Thanks Robin... oh well ...here goes...off to the junk yards. Jaguars are the only things worth suffering for apart from your kids.

What is that model in your picture? It caused a short but intense fit of envy..

Of course you can get it fixed, just fit another mirror. What are you moaning about????

The idea of sending the mirror to someone is a bit weird as likely a lot more costly than a replacement especially if from a wrecker!

That was my 1961 XK150S, had the original E-type engine. Loved that car but got married and had to cut costs, sold many, many, MANY years ago for $600, present value nearer to $100,000. Pic below.

If you'll walk around to the passenger side (US) of the car and look at the back of the mirror through the windscreen, you can see the manufacturer name. Mine luckily says FoMoCo "Gentex" on my 2006 S-Type. That's good to know.

In the meantime, you may want to put some rags or an olde towel on the dash below the mirror in case it leaks before you get it fixed. Don't want any leaks to take out the dash...

Default Mirror Fluid Leak

Unfortunately, the mirror leaked onto my dash and radio console. Most noticeable is the staining on the CD player screen. Does anyone know of a cleaner to remove it? I thought nail polish remover or something similar, but I don't want to melt the plastic screen in the process and end up in a worse situation.

By the way - sending the mirror to get fixed worked great. My local windshield guy removed it for free. Be careful not to break the windshield if you try it yourself.
