Default Lug nuts...

Boy am I cheesed-off...

Following list advice I replaced the OEM lug nuts on my car but boy did I get a bad deal.

In less than 9 months they are all covered in rust showing that they were of really poor quality. Now I'm going to have to shop for replacements but how can I know if they will be any better than the ones I have?

I shopped for best price and they looked really good, but that has proved to not be the case.

Has anyone in snow conditions had good luck with getting high quality lug nuts, and if so, from where? And how does one tell if they are good or are crap like the ones I currently have?

Default Lug nuts

Hello Pab. What did you use for a replacement?

I hope they were not: "I tried Toyota lug nuts mentioned somewhere else in this forum and they allowed my wheel to "float". Only a bit but dangerous never the less.
The ones I used were from Gorilla and were 73138T. And yes they are Lexus and Toyota M12x1.5 nuts but hex 13/16" with 0.725" width. Also got locking wheel nuts from Gorilla 73631T. The width on the 1st ones was incorrect."

I used the above to replace my original lug nuts on 19" wheels. I do not take the jag out in snowy conditions so cannot say how they would do in salty conditions.

I replaced my crappy factory lug nuts in January 2010 with a set of Mitsubishi MB579290 solid chrome lug nuts that I ordered from my local Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership. They gave me a price break because I ordered 20 of them. I paid about $115 at that time. They were well worth it - more than five years later, absolutely no rust or pitting at all. I highly recommend them....

When you do this, you'll need to upgrade your lug nut wrench from the lousy 19mm factory wrench to a 21mm deep socket and breaker bar if you have not already done so. You can buy these two components at any auto parts store (or at Lowe's or Home Depot) for around $20 total....

Yup did everything right including getting a Gorilla wrench. Just ended up with very poorly made parts.

Will probably have to go to a Dodge or Mitsu dealer and get a set of MB579290

I hate to type this, but isn't there a 5 plus page thread detailing the very subject of lug nuts.

Yes, I'm new here and 90% of my questions are answered through search and the stickies.

... But I've ordered through Amazon, Dorman 611-229 lug nuts and they're the stock 19 mm hex size.... Torqued to 95 ft lbs, and 3 months later with a few thousand miles, still torqued to spec, no issues at all.

Also like others have said, get that 1/2" breaker bar and a socket for whatever size fits the nuts. Well worth it, I can't believe how horrible the stock lug wrench is!

True, but I just wanted to report on the great displeasure I've experienced in trying to follow the recommendations in that thread. Note: this is not a rant against the postings in that thread. It's more of a follow-up about the bad luck I've had and perhaps a warning to others (look, I followed the advice, as best I could, and see what still happened...)

At least they are not broken, so that's a bonus.

Get a set of the Mitsubishi lug nuts. Yes they are a bit pricey, but they will be the last lug nuts you'll ever need to purchase for your car....

Yup, planning on that. But would a Chrysler nut be as good? It has the same part number so may be Mitsu and Chrysler's parts networks are still integrated.

That Chrysler lug nut is indeed the Mitsubishi lug nut. As I said, I purchased mine from our local Chrysler dealership parts department. As long as the part number is the same, you're good to go regardless of where you purchase them....

My local U-pull junk yard usually doesn't charge for bolts and nuts.

Lug Nut Update!!

I, like everyone else, was upset that a $50,000+ car, comes with $.50 lug nuts. I have snow tires for my '09 XF, so the wheels are changed twice a year, so their demise might be accelerated. This did not please me. After looking here, as well as a few other sites, I stumbled on to something...

Gorilla Automotive now has a "Jaguar Specific" lug nut. It's part number 73138J.

After doing some "price shopping", I found the best price at Summit Racing, at just under $5.00 each. I have a set on order, and should have them in my hot little hands within a few days. More information as it becomes available....

Just a comment on the Dorman lug nuts. I have had them for around 5 years in a no salt enviroment and they are solid and held up fine. But they do rust and the few nicks on them show rust now.

If possible a solid stainless lug nut would be better.

Somehow the image size of the Gorilla lug nuts is a little "big" on the previous post, hopefully, this one won't be quite as large...

If you have aftermarket wheels, that use a tapered seat for the lugs to "nest" in, you'll be fine. HOWEVER, if you're using OE wheels, that require the "shank style" lugs, as pictured in the photos I posted above, then the lugs you purchased WILL NOT work correctly.....
