Minor issues o2 sensor and Cruise Control
These are 2 seemingly minor issues and curious as to cause
Only when it rains and rains heavily and I am out driving and splashing water I will get a CEL and when I check is tells me over-voltage in o2 sensor- bank 2 sensor 2. If I simply drive the car it goes away ( after 2 MIL) and not to be seen until next long drive in really heavy rain. It is the only one I did not replace as it was not handy at the time. I can go get the one at Rock and change for $47 and since I got new cats last year- no problem with seizure. Curious as to what someone thinks could be actually happening or where the water is hitting that could be causing a quick short or arcor perhaps something else.
Second problem is starting the car. If I just go out and start the engine without letting it go through its on-board diag. then I see a flash -cruise not available" on the instrument panel. Goes away- cruise is available ( which I guess I have used a total of 10 minutes in 4 years). If I turn to engine on and let the yellow/orange cruise control symbol go away and then start- never see the message. What gives. I would not want cruise to go out and leave me in RP, but never an ounce of trouble- just seems to take longer to be recognized???? Battery is less than 6 months old and is top of the line AGM type. Any ideas or thought appreciated.

Tom, with the o2 sensor "only with heavy rain", could be rain making its way down the windshield flowing in between the wiper cowl and windshield making its path to the sensors wiring. That's my guess.
As far as "cruise not available" I believe that is part of the on board checklist. I will check Joyces out this evening when she gets home.

The first problem is hard to say but I would change the O2 sensor. The problems do point to something not right with that one unit. If you don't want to spend the money at least swap sensors and see if the error code follows.
The second problem has been reported before. The best answer I think was the car is starting before the entire system check can be completed. So the car will throw a quick error code that is almost immediately turned off when the system check is actually completed. You must be watching pretty closely to even see that error?
When you wait a few seconds before starting the car with the key in the on position you have given the system enough time to complete the startup check so no quick flash errors.
BUT this is just what we THINK is going on. No real data or anything.

It only does it when driving around and through puddles of water. I took a spray washer and tested the cowl and it is fine (to my surprise).
The cruise not available must be part of the onboard diag and my car is starting quicker than the check if I don't wait. However I don't remember that happening before??
Thanks
Tom

Thanks, but cowl is not leaking and I would think if it did that would not something else other than the same sensor be affected?

I had a sensor on my 00SType give me temporary codes when driving in the rain but now that I replaced it I no longer have that problem. I felt it was water splashing on a sensor that was on the edge of going bad and the water would cool it off and trip the code or signal. I say replace it. As a side note the plug is sealed with an “O” ring seal. Just be sure to do a hard reset after the replacement.
