The point is moot since very soon you will need an EPA registered shop to clear codes after the base problem has been corrected. No more code clearing by anyone other than those who are registered and attest to the fact that satisfactory repairs have been completed. Enough said.

Not that it affects anyone outside the US, but can you provide a credible reference for this info?

It's not for the S-Type but is almost the same (depending somewhat on MY and engine e.g. diesel/petrol) - certainly looks "good enough" for practical purposes.

I know something similar (*) was mooted for future cars at some date (which as I recall was yet to be decided).

(*) that only the car would clear a code, when it detected that a fix had been made, i.e. scan tools would not be able to clear codes

I thought it had been put on ice.
