It will most likely either be the switch operated by the brake pedal which ensures that the pedal is pressed prior to selecting a gear from the park position, or the relay adjacent to the gear lever (under the centre console) which is the second part of the system. Either can fail, but frequently a liberal dose of electrical contact cleaner sprayed on both will solve the problem. If that doesn't do the trick, check for an output from the pedal operated switch; if you have 12 volts, then the gear lever relay is at fault, if not, it's the pedal switch.

Yes, please, more specifics are needed.

What year is your car?

Early models ('99-'02) have a 5 speed transmission. 4 is the number displayed at the bottom left corner (D=5) of the J-gate bezel. This model has trouble with the transmission sticking in P if parked on an incline without the parking brake set.

Late models ('03+) have the 6 speed, with 5 displayed at the bottom left corner. This model has trouble with the bolts working loose that attach the shift cable to the transmission housing, but I don't think that would lock the shift lever.

Also, when the shifter is stuck in P, how far can you move it? If you can only move it about halfway to park but seems to hit a solid stop, that's the interlock within the J-gate not releasing for reasons unknown. If the shifter feels springy, as opposed to hitting a solid stop, that's a different problem.

There were several TSBs issued to address the gear selector being stuck in the 'P' position:

Some refer to the 5R55N and others to the 6HP26/28.
