No more car washes(?)!

Weird as it is, congrats on the "fix".

Glad the prob is fixed.
I think you are correct in that "something" got wet that shouldn't have.

Ok, something for people to chew on, What could of caused this and why the shifter had no power to it....the p to d now light up and so does the sport mode button...when it was locked down, they didn't light up. Someone else will have this problem in the future and it would be good to have an answer for them....Could it be the sleeve that has the tendency to leak, I notice mine was starting to seep when I was looking at the linkage. it had a lot of wires going to it. If I was making a guess, thats the one thing that could of knock the transmission out of service....Any thoughts??????????

Good news, but you didn't actually find anything?

Maybe a bad connection that you moved when you pulled the surround off? Give everything a good shake while you have it open.

I don't have the car up on stands so I cant take pictures of the linkage or the sleeve, I really think it could have been that sleeve with all those wires going to it. . I am ordering a new one for sure with my new filter, pan and transmission fluid, Already have that in process and have a contact with that. Ordering new bolts for the pan too....one thing I hate is to pay someone money on something I can easily do. I need a good repair manual for a s type....Any suggestions? Does chiltons still make a good manual specifically for a Jaguar S type?

Did you check for codes?
IIRC the brake switch should give a code, I'm leaning towards the switch as that's what you are most likely moving as you get in and out of the car and try to move the shifter, really just a guess though.

Shouldn't you also hear the solenoid click when you step on the brakes to shift out of Park? On my '02, I think it's fairly faint so I really have to listen to it.

Next question, are your brake lights working properly when the shifter won't release? I think the same circuit that powers the brake lights is also tied to the shift release solenoid. If water from the carwash got into the brake lights, you could have a partial short to ground, diverting some of the current needed to actuate the solenoid. The brake lights may come on but not as brightly as normal.

I believe the lights are set by software packets sent along the CAN bus to the J-Gate module. To be sent, the PCM and/or TCM need to see what's happening to the shifter and I THINK (but don't know) they do that via the shift linkage from the lever down to the side of the trans. On the trans side are the 2 8mm bolts that must be present (they fall out) and snug. If they're not, the sorts of problems reported here occur (don't know about the J-Gate lights as no-one ever reported either way as I recall). So I'd put those 2 bolts as #1 suspects.

Thanks V8, Thats what I did yesterday, look at those two bolts...They are snug as a button....I think the shifter is new...I did see some old broken plastic parts on the bottom by using a flashlight, Since I never fully remove my shifter, I didn't break anything luckily, I heard the thing is around $1000 dollars but I think I seen one around $500. I also looked at the brake switch. The brake lights do work...Saw the glow on the garage door. Its starting to sleet and snow here so be safe everyone and I will keep y'all posted if it happens again and I am sure it will.
