Need Transmission advice Please!
I have a 2001 Jag S-type 4.0 with 83,xxx miles on it. My transmission went out and I was told that it is a pressure control value and I basically need a new transmission. The transmission had already been rebuilt once several years ago so I carry a aftermarket drive train warranty. The warranty company is telling me that they will only cover $2000. I am being told that the job will be ruffly $3400 to put a remanned Transmission in the car with a 4 year 100,000 warranty. My other option is a used one with 89,000 miles and a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty for $1450.
Its Obvious which one to go with if I have an extra $1400 but I don't so my question is what are your thoughts on the used option and does anybody have any resources to see if I can find a better deal.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Well it seems odd because you have a dead common Ford 5 speed transmission.
Just because it's in a aguar does not make it special. I would get a properly rebuilt unit.
PowerSource Remanufactured 5R55S/W Automatic Transmissions
TRANS SPECIALTIES | JAGUAR S TYPE 5R55N TRANSMISSION Remanufactured transmissions | rebuilt transmissions | transmission parts | torque converters
Price should be under $2000 with TC.
Just shop around a bit.

Hi Mikchek . . . and greetings. This is absolutely first rate advice from [tbird6]. I can't point you to sources from as far away as Australia, but a good search of this forum using the data that [tbird6] has provided, should get you a solution within the scope of your existing warranty cover.
To the question "should I consider replacing with a used one, of indeterminate history over its 89,000 miles?" warrants any one of 3 possible responses. You get to choose . . .
PS - Show your promised appreciation. Remember to give him a big thanks.
Best wishes,
Ken

- "Go for it. Take a chance. Life on the edge!"
- "Sure. After all, it's much cheaper - or is it?"
- "No way. Why inherit someone's left overs?"

what is TC? I see the second link has a reman for just $1750...that is awesome...
Hi again Mikchek . . . and thanks for the thanks also.
The key to TC lies in the final words of the link supplied by [tbird6] - ie torque converter. As for previous advice, it would seem most unwise to go to the trouble and expense of a remanufactured autobox without also doing same for TC.
Best wishes,
Ken

Sorry about that but yes TC = Torque Converter. Just a wise practice and most rebuilt transmissions will require a TC or no warrantee anyway.
I normally recommend getting your unit rebuilt but the Ford 5 speed has a problem called "case bore wear". This means some of the machined passageways or bores in the transmission case will wear as the valves cycle back and forth. This wears the case itself and can be re-sleeved but not all transmission shops know about it or will do it.
The places I posted links to run all the rebuilt units on a transmission dyno so they can monitor fluid pressure and shift behavior. This is a really good way to insure that every unit sent out will work when installed.
Regardless of where you get it done I would ask about case bore wear and how the unit is tested BEFORE it’s installed in your car.
If you are interested take a look.

Hard to tell on the Ebay one but they do mention the case bore issue so that is good. They also don't mention the S Type so you might shoot them an E-mail just to make sure.
I do like the fact they mention a NEW solenoid pack. I found out on my 2003 Lincoln LS that just replacing shift solenoids does not fix it most of the time. I finally got Ford to replace the entire valve body under warrantee and the car has been great for the last 70K miles or so.

"if I am ordering I need a $250 mark up on it. if you want to order I will remembers you less 3.5% cc possessing fee, after your insurance pays. either way I accept no responsibility for fitment or incurred freight if there are any errors"
I dont even know what that means
I think it means he does not want to mess with you!
But really he is just getting the credit card (CC) processing fee back from you. And if it does not fit you will pay the shipping back to him.
Maybe talk to another shop? I think you will be OK but he does not seem that interested in the sale.
Will your warrantee pay before they look at the old transmission? Normally there is a bit of a battle on big repairs like replacing a transmission.

I have simular problems....after 4-3 stroke spring replacement and it was broke..put new gaskets and every thing now the trans is like nothing is wrong, no codes or any thing...just will not engage in any gear.I may have damage the plug that goes in via solenoid pack.
any have any Ideas what it could be.Or is it the shift level ?

Jagv8 you are right I was trying to get a hit from someone, anyone.!! I know I put the thing back together correctly step by step...You know how women are,,, its my Wife's car and if she's not happy then you know what that means.
I would hate to put a rebuilt trans in this thing and it does the same thing.and turning out to be electrical...Lol
I'm going to check the harness out today to make sure I did not damage the wiring going the solenoid plug, plus the gear shift cable.. it may not even be engaging and lock in park..

Have you gotten a second opinion on this? What exactly is the transmission doing or not doing? What are your codes?
