Default New here, checking out an 07 S Type tonight

Hello everyone! I'm going to check out an 07 S Type, black/black, nav system, 79,000 miles tonight. I've been keeping an eye out for the right combo of car/price, and this one looks like it might fit the bill. Visually it is in beautiful shape, we'll see if I notice anything that's a concern on the test drive. Just wanted to check in to see if anyone had any feedback as to specific things I should look for/be aware of when checking out the car. I've been a long time admirer, but this would be my first Jaguar. I owned a Magnum R/T that I (stupidly) traded in for a more economical "commuter car" a couple years ago, and I'm ready to get back in to something a little more luxurious.

Which engine option? V6 3.0, V8 4.2 or V8 4.2R (supercharged) variations make a huge difference in the driving experience, price and maintenance requirements.

It's the V6 3.0, sorry for leaving that our. Just about to take it out for a drive now.

I always get bashed for saying this, but I regret my 3.0 everyday of my life. I should have held out for AT LEAST a 4.2.

Well we tried to take her out for a spin, and the parking brake wouldn't disengage. The dealership is having their mechanic take a look at it and is supposed to call me when it's fixed, but it doesn't really inspire a lot of confidence in the car. :-/

I drove an 01 about a week ago with only 32k miles on her. She was beautiful... But I waffled just long enough for someone else to buy her. I've been kicking myself ever since.

First did they try holding the parking brake lever down? That is how you disengage it for brake and wheels checks. Next I personally would not recommend a Jaguar as a primary vehicle. As I've stated in another thread, its dissapointing and amazing that in this day and age they still have the electrical gremlins that they have always had.

They fooled with it for quite a while, not sure exactly what all they did.

No, I'll still keep the sensible Elantra for my every day vehicle!

Silly me then. Going strong since spring 2006, nary a glitch. Touch wood.

For the OP- did the mechanics know the the PB will release as soon as you select D or R?

They were just salesmen, not mechanics, and they honestly did seem pretty clueless :-p Although, the main salesman did say he had driven the car previously so I assumed he knew what he was doing. Maybe it will turn out to be nothing and I can use it as bargaining leverage.

And actually, they did put the car in reverse and try to back it out of the space, but it wouldn't move because the parking brake was still engaged. I was standing nearby and could see/hear that they were putting the car in gear and trying to get it to move. I'm still not totally convinced it wasn't user error, but we'll see what they say tomorrow after the mechanic looks at it.

Well maybe it was all meant to be, because an '03 4.2R with lower mileage just popped up today for a lower price. I have a call in about that one and hope to take it out for a test drive later today. Meanwhile, the listing for the one I checked out last night has been pulled.

I don't know??

My 2005 STR has been my one and only car for over 5 years and it is the best I have ever had!

Best driving and most reliable. Never stranded and have had some repairs that are common but the worst has been a lack of heat until I flushed the heater core.

I am at 94K miles and looking at XFR's. Wish they would drop in price like the S Type but they are too popular for that!

FYI... I hear from my mechanic that the 3.0 has fewer problems and is more reliable than the 4.x versions. With that said, several 3.0 owners say it's under powered. So depending on what your driving habits are. I just prefer the big V-8 engines. ;-)

Well, I really, REALLY miss my Hemi, so safe to say I also prefer the big engines ;-)

I just drove the 2003 4.2L supercharged. It had a lot of shimmy in the steering wheel, it lurched a LOT, and the brakes were a little sticky. They also just took the car in, and it has not been inspected yet. There were more body dings than I wanted to see. And, despite my preference for big engines, I actually preferred the ride in the '01 3.0 that I drove last week. Much smoother, and much quieter. The price on this one is fair, but I think with all of those considerations, I'm going to keep my eyes open and see what else comes along.

The search continues...

If you want a V-8 get a 2003 and up model. The V-6 is pretty solid no matter what the year. They have a list on known problems but they are not expensive to repair unless the dealer gets a hold of the car!

Plan to DIY or the costs will get too high.

Might be true of the 4.0L versions, not at all true on the 4.2L

I had a 3.0 for my first jag and it was my daily. It never left me stranded either. I think its all in how the owners take care of their cars.

I wouldn't buy a pre-2003 S-Type no matter what engine it had in it.
