Default New Jag Owner needs technical help

Hello Everyone,

Recently I bought a 2001 Jag S Type V8, as a project car. When I was buying the car the seller told me it needs a Flexplate, obviously there was a knocking/rattling sound while the engine was running. I took a chance and drove the car back and the engine died - meaning it doesn't start anymore, the starter doesn't really make any sound. (Well, my fault on taking a chance)

Anyway, towed the car, checked the error codes - it gives me P0340 and P1388.

I am asking you an advice where do I start now? Trying to get the flexplate or getting the engine out and working on there.

Any kind of advice is good. I do have the time and means to work on the car myself.

Thank you,

Just A Dude.

You need the codes PDF (in JTIS or the FAQs). The P0340 may well mean the car won't run till you fix the cause (anyone know for sure?).

If it's what P0340 says it may be a very cheap fix.

Sorry, I'm not an expert in these kinds of things, but maybe this might help out:

OBD-II Trouble Code: P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

Thanks everyone for replying so far,

JagV8 -downloading the JTIS right now

bfsgross - Well that is also a question and I am not afraid to get my hands dirty if it is a problem.

But I need to know where to start? Trying to change the flexplate or working on the enginge, because if I started by changing the flexplate I would try to do it by getting out transmission.

Do you guys think that Code P0340 and P1388 be connected? and if so how?

The other question, if this could have been the problem in the first place? Maybe the P1388 (Variable Cam Timing Overretarded (Bank #2)) can have caused the rattling/knocking instead of flexplate?

salmanezkhanz - thanks for the link!

Don't use that link. Use the proper Jag codes PDF. You'll never regret using the right data.

You're overthinking, I reckon. Fix P0340 and then see.

JagV8, where can I find those pdfs? I tried installing JTIS - first took forever to install it and later it always crashed on me (Windows 7).

You'll need it working sooner or later.

They're PDF files so just hunt for them where you installed it. Or refer to my previous post....

JagV8,

I've been struggling a lot with JTIS21, but with no results, if it is possible could you give me more info on how to work P0340 out? Also, how could I browse those files in the JTIS folder without accessing JTIS exe file, cause It crashes on me when I try to choose any option. (Reinstalled twice now)

I know it might be a hassle for you, but would help me a lot. I looked through the FAQs and error codes. I didn't find the pdf file itself and the post gives error codes to about P0250.

I'm sorry if i'm missing something here, just so much info and hard to find what I really need.

Thanks

Got the JTIS working.

Went down to check if the engine turns over and the status on the flexpalte.

Looks like the engine does not turn. From the hole in the transmission flexplate looked fine, managed to turn the engine a little by turning the flexplate. Tried to start the car, starter worked for a while and then stopped, after that it clicked.

The mechanic told me it was not the problem of a flexplate, but rather rods in the engine.

So I have two choices either to sell a car with a loss or try to swap an engine. Maybe you guys have any more suggestions?

Would be willing to hear all of them. Thanks.

Depending on the cost of the new engine (seems to me you would be putting it in so save some money there) and then you have to look at all the other things that might need to be replaced on the car and the shape as a whole should determine your next step. You see what you can buy these cars for on the web now so....Good luck with whatever you decide

You might also consider if it is a project car, parting it out if you decide to get rid of it.

Unfortunately, P1388 could mean a clogged VVT unit or broken secondary tensioner or worse yet the secondary timing chain that would cause the P1388 and your other symptoms.

If your not in for too much $$$ might not be a bad idea to part out the car to recoup your initial investment - replacement engines are costly and failure of the plastic tensioners is quite common.
