Default no start after used dash is installed.

Hello,

My car is a 2000 S-type v8 4.0 with 57K miles original owner. The car would not start (no fuel pump sound, no relay clicking, no engine turn over) after a used (ebay) was installed. It started right away when I reinstalled the original dash. There must be some sort of anti-theft with respect to used part? If so, how do I make the used dash work with the car?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Yes, that is correct. I’m not sure what is required to make a used instrument cluster work in a different car, but I think it requires dealer-level programming. Hopefully somebody more in the know can chime in with details.

What was wrong with the original?

Needs to be programmed to the car with Jaguar diagnostic software.

From my ADVANCED JAGUAR ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS 682 service training guide.

S-TYPE SECURITY SYSTEMS
Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS)
The Passive Anti-Theft Module integral with the instrument pack interfaces with the PATS Transceiver to deter vehicle
theft.
If a valid ignition key is not read by the instrument pack (PATS) before the key is transitioned to ON, the vehicle will
be Immobilized from driving away. Immobilization is accomplished in two ways:
• The instrument pack will not activate the starter relay, preventing engine cranking.
• The PCM will not enable fuel pump operation or fuel injection.
Instrument pack PATS communication to the transceiver is via a serial communication protocol. The PATS transceiver
is grounded via the instrument pack. The instrument pack completes this circuit to ground to activate the starter relay.
PATS Communication to the PCM is accomplished via SCP.

Basically, the replacement INSTPK is not configured to YOUR car and the key is NOT configured to the replacement INSPK.

Thanks for all the comments. My car is a very early version of the first production year. The problem is the random power drawn from the instrument cluster causing the fuse to blow and disabling the car. I traced it to either the electroluminescence display or a faulty driver transistor that provides power to the display. I don't know if this problem is ever fixed in later production runs. Since I hold the Guinness world procrastination record, I live with it for decades by adding a fast blown fuse to the driver transistor circuit.

Anyway, the Jaguar dealer no longer has the tool to reprogram/configure the necessary components. Same thing with several other independent repairs shops.

INSTPK PCM and key combo should allow car to drive off

can a non-virgin INSTPK or PCM even be configured with IDS?

good point. If op could get key from seller. Problem solved. Plus there is a catch that bob gauff has posted a rew times about an sdd question answered wrong that renders the cluster inoperable and unfixable

Wow, sounds like you've gone pretty in-depth trying to isolate the fault. Have you seen this thread, about fixing a flickering or inop odometer display?:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ype-faq-45129/

I recently did this repair myself, and was in awe that the original poster was able to isolate the fault to a cold solder joint at a specific resistor. When I inspected my instrument cluster, sure enough, the solder at this one spot had a rough appearance, indicative of a cold joint. I reflowed the solder at the one connection and all was good. I didn't do anything else.

So I gets to wondering if it might be worthwhile for you to inspect the complete circuit board with a magnifying glass. Maybe you will likewise find a similar problem somewhere else that is causing a current drain. I'm thinking a wisp of solder touching something nearby and creating an unwanted current path. Just a thought, FWIW.
