p0781 after tcm reflash
Hello everyone.
I have been experiencing the lurch for quite some time and finally decided to get the tcm reflashed today. Even though i could still feel the lurch present it was much better. Later on the day when coming from a full stop going from 1 to 2 gear the car jumped and the gear box fault and check engine light came on. After reading the codes it showed p1000 and p0781. Any thoughts of what might have happen and what exactly that code means. I am gonna call the dealer tomorrow but i would like to know your thoughts about it. Thanks.

JTP ... is very old. Any dealer should be using IDS/SDD and it will have used the newest appropriate version.
P1000 is normal until you've driven the car a while -- please read the codes PDF (in stickies here & JTIS) first few pages to understand all this stuff.
The same PDF explains P0781 and apart from that there's a TSB (JTB00072) but it says to reflash the TCM with current software so not really relevant as far as I can see.
It does seem very odd! I suppose it could be that it can now manage to report the underlying problem...

I just called the dealer where I had the reflash done and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow. He told me that they need to run a diagnostic on it to see whats going on. As I understand it the p0781 code has to do with 1-2 shifting. The rpm of the car does not lower when it is going from 1 to 20 so when the second gear is engaged its engaged with higher rpms then normal. And thats what happened to me. Besides that after the gear box fault light came on the lurch was completely gone. Should I test drive the car today and see what's happening any suggestions? Thank you.
So the dealer said that i need a new tranny because they dont fix them they just change them. I asked him which version of the software they had but they wouldn't tell me. So now I really dont know what to do.Any thoughts?
You'd need a trans shop to do trans work (or DIY but it's pretty advanced IMO). The ZF 6HP26 is now getting common (it's also in BMW, Audi, some Fords etc).
You can check the software if you're keen in at least a couple of ways. JLR Mongoose (with IDS/SDD) is one, or a somewhat painful way is to use an ELM327 with a hyperterminal-type app and type in scary-looking commands by hand (DIY if willing to suffer). Chances are both will tell you that you have the latest applicable version.
They likely used the Mongoose equivalent with IDS/SDD and don't know much about how to tell the version.

I very much hope and expect the dealer managed to flash the right version. They do similar stuff all the time. (A trans shop won't do it, at least I expect not - they tend to be gears & oil types not computer techs with jag-specific software.)
Y' know, in that TSB 307-17 write-up on Google, there was also a TSB 307-13 which specifically stated that there was a problem with the clutch converter of 3.0 liter S-type models 3HM45255-3HM83148 that gave a P0741 code. Does your VIN fall in that VIN range?
Some dealers ARE aware of possible bad things happening after a TCM reflash - my own dealer warned me about it, and said that if anything went wrong I would have to replace the tranny at a cost of over $4000. At the time I didn't know anything about the STR VIN range (M45255-88335) with that same clutch converter problem, and was so scared that I decided not to have it done.

the dealeer will have the latest software from jaguar as it is updated 24/7 through the internet. mostly overnight. But I have been using sdd and it wants to do a update while IM using it. depending on what Im doing Ill either say ok or no. Updates are generally fast. the issue you may be experiancing is that its a new issue period. or the trans had adapted to line pressure changes and shifting timing as it sees it. It does this (adapt) just like the engine to maintain performance drivabilty standards as the engine trans etc wears. anytime a tcm is reflashed adaptation are cleared and start all over. a reason to drive not in sport mode and avoid full throttle downshifts(agrressive driving for a few 100 miles) adaptation can drift and cause issue which is why it is always a good thing to clear as this is a common issue with fault/drivabilty. I would clear and see how it drives and how often it repeats if at all. if mine I would do a pan drop and fill with new trans pan since it is the filter on the ZF. past that yes youll need a trans rebuild. NOTE these was info released years ago from ZF that on gear load faults to reflash first and then replace trans if that didnt fix. Ive found 1 in 5 needed a trans as the reflash didnt fix. but USED to be that code ALWAYS got a new trans. times change, new info comes along all the time

Thank you all for the replies. Robinb yes my vin falls into that range. Brutal what do you mean by clear? The disconnecting of the battery for 10 min and the touching of the terminals?
if me I would reflash again, pan drop and refill with new fluid. yes costs money, but not as much as trans. just keep your fingers crossed. No differant than going to a doctor and getting pills, therapy first to avoid surgery. cheapest first that has a possibilty to fix, but with the realization it may not too.
Ok will do. Im going for a reflash on tuesday and see what happens. I know there are some websites that sell the pan filter and oil together. Can any of you direct me to one of those sites? Besides knowing that our tranny is zf 6hp26 i dont know any other specific and dont want to order something different. I appreciate all your help. I will document whats happening until I fix the problem. Thank you.
