Looking for any and all input so don't worry about repeating anything!

Yes my next step is the dealer I will call several to make sure they give the same answer.

I have been talking to Brutal but he says it can't be done. You must use a new ECU.

Maybe try a PM to Cambo.

I _think_ it can be done but am not _sure_. I think the "trick" will be making IDS put the VID (or CCF or whatever) into the used PCM which in turn means getting the existing VID from somewhere (need not be the original PCM though commonly it would be).

I think then the immo setting will need to be done.

Do not trust me on this...

(I am fairly sure Brutal is right but for the up to 2002.5MY, which has different PCM etc.)

Look, you can program a used PCM to the car, it's been done before, even here on the forum! https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...c-fixed-67541/

"After trying to reflash and run the immobilisation routine we concluded that the ECM must be dead. We installed a used ECM, ran the immobilisation routine and viola the car started and ran."

Right but the VIN was still showing as the donor vehicle.

Jagman1984 then goes on to explain how to manually start a session with the car disconnected from the IDS/SDD, so that the VID block get's taken from the as-built data in IDS, not read from the car, and then you start the PCM reflash with the car still disconnected so it cannot read the data from the module and will take it from the IDS/SDD instead, and then right before the "writing" phase you reconnect and away it goes.

The other method for forcing a flash like this is to pull the fuse for the particular module so it cannot be read first. This was actually in a bulletin from JLR about "swapping modules" but I can't find it right now...

EDIT, here it is SDD BEST PRACTICE.pdf it's explaining it clearly.

I'm just thinking out loud correct me if wrong.

I think you can get vid block from old module. Then save it to disc. And re load it to new module. I've been out of the loop for a while.

Ps who in England had ids/wds. I want to update my s type r transmission control module and reset adapts.

Believe me Cambo I am not doubting or arguing with you in the least!!
Everything I have read show it's 100% possible and has been done. So much so the factory sent a TSB out with tips and more details.

I have sent another PM to Brutal as he answered on the thread you mention and even agreed with the method used!

But this week I will be calling several Jaguar dealers and see if I can get a service appointment. Think I will print out instructions and take them with me too.

That is a good IDEA!!!
There are usually several mechanics in the shop and some are really bright and up to the task of repairing cars properly but some are just there 'changing-parts' and generally should NOT be fixing cars!!! I felt sorry for the customers that had the incompetent mechanic or two that worked a few bays down from me but there isn't much I could do about it.

It is usually the 'luck-of-the-draw' to get the competent one(s) in the shop unless you find one that you know and trust and request that one.

Some people are good at mechanical things and some at electrical things.
Some at both.

Just like Hospitals have bad doctors, repair shops have bad repair techs.

Good luck with the search!!

Well I got a service appointment at the Jaguar dealer and took the car in after explaining in detail what I needed and what I wanted done.

As usual I got there and finally got to talk to someone who actually knew something. Well first he said they could not do it. Then I showed him that 15 page instruction sheet Bob posted. It's great to be informed! Thank you very much Bob!! Then he changed his tune and said that dealership did not have the correct equipment to do it. This still smells bad and I think he was either lying or just clueless.

I said you don't use the SDD? Yes we do but don't have ability to work on that old of a Jaguar. 2005 is old? I guess so. He did find another local dealer that supposedly did have the right gear to do it.

My question to you guys is I found another way that may work?
How about cloning my ECU?

It seems like this would cut out all the Jaguar dealer BS and just image the ECU similar to imaging a HD in your home PC.

I have called several places and they claim they can do it but there is a small percentage of ECU's that they can't clone. If that happens then no charge and I just pay postage to return the old bad one and used good one to me.

Has anyone cloned an ECU?
Cambo can you clone an ECU with your software?

I think I going to send it in anyway but have no experience with this.
I am a bit leery because the ECU is irreparable and maybe that will affect the cloning process?

Probably just utterly out of their comfort zone with IDS/SDD.

If you have the same PCM as me (twin cpu internally) cloners will likely never have met one and could well be stuck.

I'm unsure exactly when the PanPAG (single faster cpu) came in. After your VIN maybe.

If you take the lid off do you have two 256-pin (rectangular) chips?

(They'll be 7055, probably marked 64F7055F40 or similar - the later has just one 7058 I think)

Sorry JagV8. I have them in a box for shipping already.

I did take the cover off both of them to check for water damage and to make sure they were the same inside.

There were 3 large chips soldered directly to the board but unsure of the wire count.

This is getting ridiculous now...

It can be done with IDS or SDD, the procedure is pretty straight forward...

As for cloning, yes in principle it's possible but like JagV8 says, it might be that whoever does the cloning is not familiar with these ECU's.

There are two processors in the ECU, one manages the fuel/spark/etc, the other manages the throttle. BUT if i'm not mistaken the VIN is stored on a separate EEPROM and that would also have to be cloned from your existing ECU.

The tools to make the cloning would be something like a K-Tag, soldering directly to the CPU's, but to copy/write the VIN you also need something like an X-Prog.

Also if you have mis-matched software versions in the two processors, it will throw up a heap of fault codes. The factory files are flashed in pairs every time, they must be the matching versions...

Personally I think this is far riskier than flashing the used ECU with IDS or SDD... not to mention you cannot be sure it's been done correctly until you get it back and connect it to the car.

I know it has been done before (in the UK, and in Russia) but you really need someone who knows what the hell they are doing.

Random thought, I can get a return flight from Sydney to Houston for $750 USD between 19th Jan - 9th Feb, there are other offers like that popping up all the time...

If clones were more reliable I'd suggest a Mongoose etc but you also would need a hefty power supply. And IDS/SDD could be easier (though this is hardly a typical use).

I sent you an email mate but just in case you missed it.

Have it on good authority that cloning will not work on these particular ECU's, so if you haven't sent them off yet, don't...

My suggestion, grab this Mongoose that Bob has for sale https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/p...ftware-171671/ I don't think he sold it just the ad timed out...

And i'll help you set up an IDS/SDD so you can do the flash yourself.

Cameron you are 1 in a million!

Yes got your PM and responded but I want to keep this in the open in case others fall down the same black hole!

Too late but I will call and get the ECU's returned to me from the cloning company. Without them attempting anything. It was just sent off and they have not received it yet.

Great info from that tech about cloning. It was a new technique to me and as always there are limitations.

I have been in contact with Bob before about this and will talk to him again.
I guess after I use it I could sell it. Just a fairly complicated/expensive tool I am not sure I have much use for after this repair?

Well... it will diagnose every module and do a heck of a lot.

Sorry to spoil the Mongoose Idea but I sold/shipped it on Wed Nov 30 and it is now at it's new home in Michigan.

Surely someone in Houston area has IDS/SDD and software/laptop.

Hi Bob thanks for the update but I have looked high and low in the Houston area but other than Brutal I can't find anyone with the SSD or a Mongoose to try it. He has not answered any messages since his first refusal.

Looking more and more like I will be leaving the Jaguar world on a very sour note! On top of all the repair problems I now have a time problem. Car is due a safety inspection before registration this month. So if it's not fixed before the end of December I will have another round of problems with an unregistered car. No inspection-no registration.

It's heart breaking but the junk yard is looking more likely every day. I have the fender, HID light and headlight bracket and have repaired the wiring problems. The used ECU I purchased from the UK is unknown but most likely good and just needs programmed with my car data.

Anyone in the Houston area with a SDD or Mongoose??

No way can this forum let this STR go for scrap because the PCM needs reflashing.

No way.

Surely someone can help (I'm trying but i'm also 8600 miles away so there's only so much I can do).

This sucks!

There must be some Jaguar specialists somewhere nearby.
