Rear seal
I have an 06 s type r. Same 4.2 in essence. I needed my torque converter replaced and was quoted 6.5 to 7 hrs or about 750.00 dollars. The seal replacement would probably add one more hr. I ended up doing it myself once i figured out how to get to the top 6 bolts. Still the quote i got was from an indie i trust and is always more than fair. I just did not have the extra money and i am a diyer or i could not own this car
Do all of you really know, what the initial question is about? Do all of you know exactly what the "mail seal" or "rear seal" is, or does everyone give an answer based upon what there interpretation of "mail seal" or "rear seal" is? To put this to an extreme: I would also call the seal around the backlite (=rear window) a "mail seal" or "rear seal". Just like many other seals could be called that instead of using their proper names... Yes, my first idea, of what the question was about was the rear crankshaft seal, but as said: There are a lot of other rear seals.
If the question is indeed about the rear crankshaft seal, then yes to what motorcarman wrote - I am doing exactly that at this very moment on my van, and same story: Propeller shaft removed (which I assume applies to the S-Type as well), transmission removed (I converted a big car-jack by bolting a massive steel plate onto it to a transmission-jack. I did the same transmission removal years ago without that jack and wrecked my back by doing so), and as my van is a manual, then removed the pressure plate and clutch disc and also noted that the bearing for the transmission inside of the rear end of the crankshaft has "dissolved" and replaced that.

Well, the OP does not appear to be a "frequent flier" on the Forums; his immediate prior post was in February 2014; it was also relating to the time required to do a repair. Perhaps he just uses us to check on quotes from his mechanic...

Hey scotjh9 good job! Did you make a thread on that real main seal replacement? I have not done one on a Jaguar and was not sure how different it was from the old American V-8's I am use to working on.
