Replacement engine control module
Hi everyone
as some of you know from my previous posts
I drove my car to auto Electrician and had to tow truck it home
After exploring all possibilities the engine control module has definitely failed
I had a friend in the United Kingdom who gave me one of his spears
that arrived in new Zealand today
My question is
How Exact do the part number have to be
I have tried to find out but keep hitting a brick wall
All part number are the same except the last two numbers
Mine says CN and the replacment says GA
dose this make much of a difference
Thanking you
Darrol

Working from potentially faulty memory here, but I think the security system will not allow swapping in a used ECM. This may only apply to the early models or visa versa, so don't quote me on that.
IIRC, when an ECM is first installed, it must be programmed to that specific VIN. Unfortunately, the VIN portion of the programming is permanent and cannot be changed. The instrument cluster is also programmed to the specific VIN. When you first turn on the ignition, the two modules compare notes. If in disagreement, the security system kicks into overdrive and will not let the engine start.
In theory, you can install a brand-new module, if it has never been programmed. But supposedly no joy with used.
I think the workaround is to install a matching module, instrument cluster, and key from a donor vehicle. However, This could cause trouble at registration time if the authorities check the digital VIN during an emissions test and it doesn't match the physical VIN or paperwork. Once again, don't quote me on that. Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable will chime in.

I explained the suffix difference on your other post.
And sadly I, too, have something in the back of my head along the lines of what Karl writes, about the problematic of swapping the module for that from another car.
The emissions test, however, is probably not your issue, as I think NZ - just like Australia - does not have any such test.

Only for the original type of PCM used up to 2002 or so (Ford PCM150 I think they are). The Denso ones can be reflashed.
You're right, of course, but this S-Type has CAN so it's the Denso PCM (ECM).

Yes you are correct it has can bus
It is a
2003 s type R

I have spoken to the original owner
he said that back in 2014 it had a ecm meltdown
and totally unusable
And it was originally a Denso
he had a company Modify one to work with the car
unfortunately that company doesn't exist anymore
Thanking you
Hopefully you'll be able to connect to the replacement ECM when installed. Make sure you avoid the same mistake the apprentice made and that you know what you are doing before trying to configure it.
