Question Replacing Jaguar S Type Automatic Gearbox 2003

Hello Honourable members,

Does it need some expertise to swap or change the automatic gearbox onjaguar s type 2003? I have found the second hand one from the scrap yard andthey are charging £250.

The mechanic needs £400 to fit it, which I find somehow expensive. I have remove and fix gearboxes on Japanese cars but not Jaguar which most people seemto suggest that are complicated.

Any advice before I try to do the job. Thanks

Not much different but if the car is rusty I would add some extra for removing and replacing rusted hardware. The exhaust needs to be removed and that could add some problems.

That's a very low price for a used 6 speed ZF. Are you sure it's the correct transmission?

Remember that balance is a big issue. The u-joints have different colors on the nuts and washers as the factory installed them. Try your best to mark and replace all the bolts and nuts as close as possible to factory placement.

Thanks very much for the advice; it’sreally encouraging and educative as well. About the gearbox, yah the gearbox isthe same, also 2003 model and it comes with the torque converter, I checked itphysically. My only concern is, I’m not sure if it’s in good working order, butit comes with a warrant.

Please, another quick one, does itneed some electrical diagnosis after fitting another gearbox? The mechanic whogave me the quote mentioned of that, and that surprised me.

Well you should have the Jaguar dealer check that the TCM has been flashed with the latest software version. This is to help with the Lurch problem.

I would never install a used tranny without changing the fluid and filter and with the ZF also the sleeve as it's only $15 and you must have the pan off to replace it. Remember we have a plastic pan that has the filter integrated in it so the whole pan must be replaced.

Do you know how to properly fill and check the fluid level? It’s not that easy.

We have a great thread from a guy called CCC. I just saw that it became active again and I think it's up to 8 pages in length now.

That has the most complete instructions with pictures and part numbers I have ever seen. Right now it's directly below your thread.

But search for "ZF transmission oil and sleeve change writeup with pics FAQ"

It's truly a work of art!!

400 starts to sound reasonable. They do need the codes read once installed. Paul
