Default Restricted performance, Engine management Light on

Good afternoon hon members
I’ve a jag s type 3.0 l v6 2003 and it has done 135500 miles, a few weeks ago the yellow message came on the dashboard, restricted performance followed by the engine management warning light, both could come on and off for a number of times. Then the restricted performance went off and after few days engine management followed. Surprisingly the car was running fine.

Now the restricted performance light does just flush once in a while. Any idea what this could be?

I have read a few threads in this forum but not getting much info of the exact problem.

At the moment I'm planning to change plugs, oil and some filters since it’s a year now since I bought it, but I’m not sure if it’s a must to change the inlet manifold gaskets. If I'm to change the gaskets, how many are needed? Someone told me that I need 6 upper and 6 lower gaskets, is he right? Also are there somethings need to be done during the service? Please help hon members.

You really need to have the diagnostic codes read in order to pin down the cause of the engine check light and restricted performance messages, without knowing the codes you might as well be shooting in the dark.

p.s. I've moved your post out of the Europe section and into the S-Type section.

Spark plugs are recommended at 100k so good thinking on replacing that. I usually get a ignition coil dtc when pulling codes that was causing restricted performance light.

Yes you have 6 upper and 6 lower intake manifold gaskets but you only need the uppers if you're only doing plugs. Also replace the throttle body gasket while you're there. I'd also recommend replacing bank 1 ignition coils (covered under intake). It's not required but it will save you money in the long run. Bank 2 coils aren't blocked by anything so you could replace those as you go.

Maybe change the IMT O rings while the manifold is off? They are cheap and a pig to do in place.

It's a 3.0 so plugs are due every 70K miles. The 4.0/4.2 are due every 100K.

At 135.5K, change 'em.

Being a UK 2003 its VIN should be after M45254 so I suppose won't suffer the air leak from the infamous hose under the manifold.

As already posted, READ THE CODES

According to the information off Topix it's every 100k. I'm not sure where you found every 70k.

I second what Norri said about the IMT seals.

In the service schedule. 3.0 (& 2.5) 70K, 4.x 100K.

By way of example, ref. JLR 11 62 10_1E
JAGUAR
S-TYPE
(PETROL MODELS FROM 2006 MY)
MAINTENANCE CHECK SHEET

I got it from TOPIX.

The other ones say the same.

You could replace the plugs and still have the same problem and then you can take it apart again to fix the problem. Do not be foolish READ THE CODES!!

Haven't been able to find that. I tried looking under the reference number you provided. If you could upload a link or copy of that, that would be great. Here's all I found.

The later ones I have look almost (maybe exactly?) the same as the JTIS one(s), apart from the Arduous market & diesel ones (which aren't in JTIS).

I'm dubious about uploading them as they're Jaguar Copyright. I have no permission to upload them.

Thx very much sir for the advice, the past 6 days the warning lights havecompletely disappeared. So should I go ahead for diagnostic or wait for thelights to come back?

I could have tried but don’t have theOB to pull out the codes, that means I have to pay £50 for the diagnosis

On the other hand the vin no ends with N025...

Once again thx foe the advice I really appreciate

There's a thread in General Tech about OBD tools. Cheap ones start at under a tenner.

The lights will be back. You have not repaired the problem causing the error.

I still don't see any codes? Please read the codes. You have been asked at least several times. We can't help without the proper information and the codes only point in the general direction.

So yes. Pay to get them if you must but in the US any parts store will read them free of charge. Be sure and write down the EXACT number the reader gives you. There is a lot of bad information out there about what the codes mean so bring them back to us to interpret.

You can get an elm 327 on Amazon for ten bucks and download an app to read the codes. If you don't know the codes to point you in the right direction you'll just be throwing parts at it.

Rather than spend 50 quid on getting the codes read invest in your own tool for less money and you have it for next time.

Well thus a wise idea, saving and continue using the tool. Thx for that. Now that I've made up my mind to buy the diagnostic tool, which could be a better one and can work on most cars (universal) among the following:
  • AutoEnginuity, tested on 2003 XK8, 2000 XJ8, 2011 XJ, 2004 STR amd 2007 XKR (enhanced sensor/function availability, for an additional charge (issues with 1996 and older)
  • TOPTQK, tested on 2000 XKR and 2003 S-typeR
  • Innova 2030, tested on 2001 XK8 and 2004 XJ8
  • Innova 3030, tested on 2001 S-Type, 2008 XKR and 1996 XJR6
  • Innova 3100, tested on 2002 XK8 (My 3 year old INNOVA 3100 says 'CAN compatible' on the face, has the color coded LEDs and PC link reports)
  • Innova 3100f, tested on 2006 XK8
  • Innova 3120, tested on 1995 XJ12
  • Innova 3130, tested on 2000 XJ8
  • CodeKey, tested on 1995 XJ6, 1999 XK8
  • Actron CP9035, tested on 2003 X-type
  • Actron CP9175, tested on 2001 S-Type and 1996 XJR6
  • Actron CP9180, tested on 2004 S-type
  • Actron CP9185, tested on 2002 XKR
  • Actron CP9575, tested on 1999 XJR
  • Actron CP9580A, tested on 2004 XJR
  • OBDkey, tested on 2001 S-type and X350 XJR
  • OBDCOM, tested on 1998 XJR, 2000 XK8, 2001 S-Type, 2003 S-type, 2005 S-Type R and 2009 XF
  • CEN-TECH 94169, tested on 2007 XJ8
  • CEN-TECH 98614-2VGA Scanner, tested on 2000 XK8 with real time data logging
  • CanOBD2 3030, tested on 2002 X-type
  • carcode.com software based and cable unit, tested on 2001 XKR and 2003 S-type
  • ELM327 bluetooth or hardwired version, with Torque app (for Android), tested on 1998 XJR, 2003 XJ8 and 2005 XJ8,
  • Kiwi PLX bluetooth, with Torque app (for Android), tested on 2003 S-Type R
  • Memoscan U480, tested on 1999 XJR and 2006 S-type
