Road Trip To The Big Apple
This weekend I drove my granddaughter up to NY City so she could do a bit of sight-seeing. I had an ulterior motive in that I wanted to take the S-Type on a drive. It proved to be an extremely capable tourer. First, it was very comfortable and handled very well. Like most S-Type owners have reported earlier, gas mileage exceeded Jaguar's claims. I averaged about 31 mpg overall. It also proved to be a pretty good streetfighter in that it was good at point and squirting. The relatively compact size of the S-Type was a definite asset in the canyons of NYC. I had a bit of fun at the expense of the normally jaded New Yorkers though. They tended to ignore the traffic lights and crossed whenever they wanted. However, they stopped in their tracks when they heard the intake howl of my Jaguar since I was still hard on the gas when the lights turned green.
The only downside of the trip was all the $#%# tolls! It cost me about $30 by the time I got to the hotel in NYC. The stretch from Washington DC to NYC has to be the most expensive road trip in the US.

Haven't had to go to NYC since 1979 and hope to keep that streak alive for decades to come, but I'm glad you had fun on your trip. I continue to marvel over the gas mileage that these cars are capable of once you get them out on hundreds of miles of interstate....
Thanks Jon,
One interesting thing I noticed about the trip computer. It doesn't seem to compute the range dynamically, but rather based on the fuel mileage reading when I stopped for fuel. For example, when the fuel mileage reading was about 20 mpg, the computed range was about 300 miles after I hit the resest button. At my next stop when the fuel mileage reading was about 30 mpg, the new computed range was about 450 miles. My previous XJs computed the range dynamically, but the algorithm used was a little wacky in that I was getting ranges based on 36+mpg which the car couldn't achieve. Interestingly enough the range and mpg figures were more accurate for both cars at 80 mph than at 60 mph.

Hi StrateLoss,
The Manhatten Mall shopping center is on the corner of 32nd st and 6th Ave, next to Greely Sq. Since my granddaughter is Korean, she ate mostly at the numerous Korean restaurants in the area. I don't think she even knows anything about Halal food. At any rate, she had a good time but was exhausted and slept the whole way home.

Cool, 6th ave IS Avenue of the America's. A few blocks down on 53rd st is where the stands on for next time you are in the are, it really is great.
Pete, try Grimaldi's brick oven pizza in brooklyn, its right under the Brooklyn Bridge a block from the river cafe. I recommend going daytime while the lines are short.
Or if italian is your thing, try Pete's Downtown its on the next corner.
