Default S-Type 3.o auto Showing Gearbox Fault.

I have an S Type 3.0 auto petrol 1999.
I have had no preoblems with my car until the other day.
Driving along i noticed a Gearbox Fault warning on the instrument panel.
I stopped. stopped the engine restarted it and the fault went away. later that day the fault came back.
When the fault is showing the gears dont select properly ie, 1 to 2 ok then they stay there.
When i stop the engine and restart without the fault showing the gears are back to normal.
Help please.

Check battery voltage after car has not been used for 8+ hours.

If below 12.5V may need replacing.

If at least 12.5V then check there are no OBD codes and read fuel trims.

Default Thanks.

I have put a new battery on within the last month, it shows green but when I went out to check it, i noticed that one of the terminals was not very tight so I have tigtened it up now, I need to try it again.
I am not an engineer could you please tell me what OBD codes are and read fuel trims?
Im a retired airline pilot and used to leave all the repairs to the mechanics ha ha.
