Unhappy S type excessive smoke

We have a fabulous 2006 S type diesel that is a joy to own except when the outside temp drops to around freezing. Then a few minutes after starting the car becomes totally engulfed in white smoke from under the bonnet and wheel arches and this lasts for several minutes. If we are unfortunate enough to be at a road junction or traffic lights other motorists think we are on fire and in danger. It is very embarrassing and could be dangerous. This only happens on cold days. We have had the car since almost new and has only covered 33000 miles. I believe the cause to be related to the auxiliary heater but what can we do to minimise this issue?

There's a (non-free) dealer/indy fix if you want to improve it.

See UK forum - in the right section - for more.
