Well that's pretty much the way I see it too.

I can't make a sharp turn from a standing start with any more than about 1/4 throttle, otherwise the inside wheel lights up. About a half-second later the DSC cuts power, which is too late anyhow.

An LSD will prevent such wheelspin from happening, so the DSC won't get involved until you really overdo it.

In a straight line standing start, the LSD will ensure that it won't just be one wheel spinning & the other not putting power down to the road, so again, it's not until you completely break traction that the DSC will intervene. And then it will be a power cut.

TBH i've never felt the DSC apply the brakes because of wheel spin, it always seems to cut power. I have once experienced the DSC apply the brakes (with a massive front bias & ABS judder) when I was too hot into a corner & had understeer issues.

Can't see the LSD vs. DSC ever being a problem in 99% of street driving scenarios, in fact it will probably reduce the incidence of the DSC activating. If there is no wheelspin, then the DSC doesn't have to do anything.

And at the dragstrip? Well it's a straight-line thing so i'd say the power cut is a more likely response than one or both brakes being applied.

Fairly obvious it was a political decision and had nothing to do with engineering.

You have to remember that Jaguar & Aston Martin were in the same stable, AM was under Ford ownership from '94 till '07.

The XJS, and the XJR6 had LSD's, but with the XK8/R from '96, and the V8 XJR from '98, suddenly LSD's were dropped.

Why?

Jaguar was not allowed to upstage Aston Martin. The Aston's got LSD's, the Jags didn't. The XK was so similar to the DB7, that it had to be hobbled. And things continued on from that point. The XJ's, and then the S-Type, was sans LSD too, if the XKR hero car didn't have it, why would the more sedate models?

As soon as AM was sold, Jag introduced the E-Diff in the XK, which then also went into the XF, because they were now free to do what they want, rather than what they were told. And now Jag is making 550HP engines, and the XK is well into AM territory.

True story!

The guy engineer I contacted was a drivetrain engineer at Aston Martin until 2008. Kind of interesting no?

He was working on the paddle shift trannies.

Guys,

I think a quick shout out is in order for the guys that helped us source and ship the diff:

Duke
Euro Chop Shop
17485 Catalpa St. STE B6
Hesperia, CA 92345
760-956-2741
8:30am-5:00pm PST

Let me say these guys were great, we spent about 30 minutes talking on the phone today. They really know their stuff and they have a ton of great used Jag parts for all model types and years!

If you are looking for an elusive part or are in need of anything be it mechanical or cosmetic, give Duke a call and tell him you are a member of this Jaguar Forum and he will give you a great deal on your parts!

Thanks Duke for helping us get the Diff off to DTS and for the great deal!!

Cheers!!

I lost track a bit?
Can you post where to send donations again? Or is it all paid for now?

Dennis; Please read this thread. Your Gen I car already has a way to do this. Please read the LS site. Many Gen I LS's have installed the LSD as it is pretty cheap on that version of car.

We have one spot left for donation. So far we have raised $100 from the forum plus my $50 so we are down to the last $50 donation which I believe was secured by bfsgross....

With that I think we are good... Now with us all owning a new diff probably would be easy enough once we have a working prototype to "share the diff around. Basically whoever takes the inital prototype would then install it into their car and send theirs back to DTS for retrofit, that way no one is down for long and we would still end up with an extra diff in the end that DTS could keep and resell on their own.

I get min retro fit install it and send mine to DTS
DTS completes and sends to the next guy and so on and so forth...

This would really limit down time while we all get the upgrade!!

Just my 2 cents...

Agreed, the prototype/donor is just that, and no one person should have dibs on it. Once it's built, maybe we can work out amongst ourselves who will pay to take it home, or if DTS will end up keeping it as their test mule.

As for the individuals looking to get an LSD upgrade/build from DTS,

You would likely have to remove your stock differential from your S-Type, and ship it to DTS for the build, and wait for it to get back.

Otherwise, consider purchasing a spare differential (same spec) and shipping that to DTS for the upgrade/install. This way there is no downtime and no need to ship your one and only core out. Once that is back and installed, you are left with a spare factory open diff you can sell/pass along to another member or DTS to do their own core deposit/build.

I am willing to chip in $10 via paypal to help offset the cost of this prototype purchase. This is very exciting and I might just end up keeping my STR after all...

TBH the only thing i want for my $50 is the opportunity to have a clutch-type LSD for my car. I'm not expecting to get the money back.

Now, because of my geographical handicap, i'll be buying a diff off ebay, having it sent to DTS, retrofitted, and then forwarded to Switzerland or Australia, depending on how long this all takes.

I'd suggest everyone else does something similar, you're on your own, otherwise it gets messy...

Default LSD Lotto

I am game no matter how we end up doing the swap outs, doesnt matter to me on the timeline so I can be the first to upgrade or last, its all irrelevant in the long run, plus its cold and snowy here now, so no chance to really test out the end product until May! LOL!!

Maybe someone in a more reasonable climate would be a good test subject for the prototype...

Of course this is all cart before the horse as it may take months for DTS to come up with a viable option, if at all...

Gotta keep reminding myself prototype...prototype... too easy to get excited. Its kinda like that feeling you get when the powerball lotto is over $100 million so you actually go buy a ticket and then sit back and think how you would spend the money IF you win!!

I believe that the 2 posts that describe traction control in our cars sums it up to the best of my knowledge. I can try to contact Torsen and find out more details, but I suspect that how LSD proportionately distributes power is not in conflict with the traction control programming, so they work together in general.

I do not believe that a Torson or Quaife LSD unit will physically fit into a Gen 2 carrier. As the Quaife 8.8 drawing shows, the gear housing is a constant diameter and too long. Same goes for a Torsen LSD. If you look at the gear housing for the stock Gen 2 carrier and then at a Ford TrueTrac LSD, I can believe that the Truetrac can be machined down to fit into our Gen 2 carriers.

I have already decided to put in a Cobra LSD in my 2000 S-type project car so that I can run 3:55 gears to better match up with the TR6060's .5 ratio 6th gear. I am slowly purchasing the parts when I see them at a good price. Purchased the 3:55 gears, and a Mark 8 IRS carrier and I already have a custom drive shaft in the car. Since this swap has already been done on Gen 1 LS's this will be the best route for me on this car in order to handle up to 600HP.

On my STR, I can't wait to see if this project pans out. This will be the easiest way to get LSD into the car.

No rush, I was happy just to get the diff ordered and on its way! You guys have all been great about chipping in and making this an affordable attempt for the group.

I am really pleased with this group and the caliber of the folks we have on here on the forum!

Thanks for all of your hard work tracking this down! I am glad I was able to get involved and contribute to the LSD project!
