S-Type R ATE caliper compatibility
Hello all,
I have at least one caliper that is binding slightly so I'm looking at refurbishing all 4 calipers/carriers on my STR. It's currently doing very short journeys as I can't have it off the road, so I need a set of used calipers to refurbish and then swap over. STR parts are thin on the ground but appear to be very similar to those fitted to, possibly some but not all, models of X350 XJ and XF. XF versions seem more plentiful and certainly cheaper from ebay etc.
Can anyone confirm that they are the same before I take an expensive gamble?
Thank you very much for your help
Jim

These seem to be the part numbers and fit the following cars:
XJ-R [X350] 4.2 V8 Supercharged (2003-2009)

Part Number: C2C27283 (LH front)
Part Number: C2C27285 (RH front)
Part Number: C2C29164 (RH rear)
Part Number: C2C29166 (LH rear)
XJ-R [X350] 4.2 V8 Supercharged (2003-2009)

Both can have a 355 mm disc at the front but it looks like the calipers are at least not identical from the point of view of the part numbers.
Does anyone list a 355mm disc or matching caliper for both cars?

So it's a little tricky but i'll try to explain.
The S-Type R from 2006MY (VIN N52048 onward) has ATE calipers, in Silver colour.
The X350 XJR and Super V8, from 2006MY (VIN G49701 onward) has ATE calipers, but two versions available, Black colour or Silver colour.
These are identical apart from the colour, and an R badge on the caliper spring for XJR. These are the same as the S-Type R from 2006MY onward.
The 4.2L X150 XKR from 2006.5MY to 2009MY, the non-Alcon cars, use the same Black ATE calipers mentioned above from the X350 & X358 XJR.
So you have options, just be sure you get the right colour.

Before you go down the calliper re-built/replace path it may be worth checking there is not an internal fault with the flexi hoses.
I have known flexi hoses to fail internally making them act like a one-way valve with the result that it appears the calliper is binding.
Release the blead valve or the actual hose on the calliper with the fault to make sure.
If it is the calliper, I would recommend replacement rather than a rebuild.
Here is a link to the official jaguar parts catalogue for the s-type with all the part numbers and on what vin numbers they changed:

It is also a good idea to add your vehicle details including part of your vin number to your forum signature so we can all see what year car you have, see my signature below for an example.

Thanks for the info Mellow.
The hose was checked by the garage when they were diagnosing the problem. They are convinced it is the caliper piston. The hoses are braided so I would hope they are fairly resilient anyway.
As far as refurbishing vs new parts goes, and aside from the fact that they arrived at the remanufacturer today!, cost has to be a factor. New rear caliper is £400+. All four overhauled with new pistons, seals, nipples etc, and multiple layers of paint and lacquer is costing me less than that.
