what did the 1999-2002.5 S-type R's look like and offer? Didn't know they even existed.

Was this a UK only trim level during those years?

I think they were the pre-production ones. Someone actually posted some details of his car an age ago (here or UK forum). It seemed to have a mix of electronic modules of kinds from both eras of cars. I can't recall if he posted pics.

I do hope I am forgiven but used a previous post to add the UK figures and see how they stack up. I will give Jaguar a ring at Whitely Coventry to see if I can get the figures confirmed. I am very surprised how low the figures are. It would be very interesting to get a register going on this forum without giving too much information away. Any other suggestiond please fire away.

I called Jag USA last week. They put me in touch with their Archive dept.
I left a message with my question about STR production.
They are only open 2-3 days a week, I never thought they would bother getting back to me.
Friday morning a nice guy named Mike returned my call,I was really surprised and blown away with this type of customer service.
He said most of the numbers will be for the following year since Jag does its production in the late part of the year preceding the actual sticker model year.
01 for the 02 MY 80 3 for the UK Market
02 for the 03 MY 3925 520 for the UK Market
03 for the 04 MY 1168 205 for the UK Market
04 for the 05 MY 1315 107 for the UK Market
05 for the 06 MY 667 163 for the UK Market

06 for the 07 MY 698 147 for the UK Market
07 for the 08 MY 190 129 for the UK Market
Total 8043.
He did a quick scan and said by his estimate 50% looked like they went to the US.
With 03 numbers quite high it answers why we have so many members with the 03 car.Looks like 02 and 08 are VERY rare. Not even sure if 02 was available in the US.
Hope you enjoy.

In conclusion out of the 8043 STR that were manufactured in the UK 6867 were exported and 1174 were sold in the UK

Very low production numbers indeed! A forum registry for STR owners would be pretty cool. I would LOVE to see a breakdown of production numbers based on exterior color though!

There was an STR one but it closed, reopened under new management and struck me as no longer interesting...

Yes it was not very interesting. Besides the STR is at least 90% regular S Type so I gain more by reading all the S Type problems and features.

A good question is how many are still on the road.

I would guess in the UK about 350 if that, it would be interesting to see if DVLA can produce stats for various vehicles. I will give them a ring on monday to see how many STR's are being taxed, bit of a long shot but nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

I would not suggest a separate section just for the STR I was meaning if you have an STR just list it, year, colour and any extras most technical information is already contained in the correct sections where it should be.

The Mike who responded from Jaguar is the archivist. Glad to hear he responded for Jaguar to a general inquiry. He's been the archivist probably 15 years for Jag North America. He's also the Editor of the Jaguar Clubs of North America's "Jaguar Journal." The archives are in New Jersey and Mike works part-time. Before Mike, Karen Miller had been archivist for many years. My 84 xj-s test car was Karen's car. Jaguar use to own the Jaguar Clubs of North America and turned the Club over to the membership in the 1990s. Jaguar has been giving the JCNA factory tools etc so the JCNA started a tool loan program recently. I think that the archives will be entrusted to the JCNA before all's said and done.

84 xj-s 3.6 5 speed prototype
03 STR
05 S-Type 4.2

Great piece of information. Many years ago I prepared a design for the new Jaguar factory at Whitley Coventry which was built and is still occupied by Jagauar Land Rover. I also did some work at the Browns lane factory in Coventry which is now 95% demolished. Jaguar are still there with their museum. My contact for production figures is from Jaguar at Whitely. We also have a Jaguar Training Cent re here in Leamington Spa / Warwick. I moved to Coventry in 1963 when Coventry was the home of Rootes, Standard Triumph, Rover and Jaguar employing the majority of the working male population of Coventry. Those were the days.
Castle Bromwich is only 15 minutes away where Jaguar production is flat out. Best thing that could have happened was the purchase by Ford from BMW "heated front windscreen" improvement in quality and then the sale to TATA.
Just my opinion of course.
