S-Type V8 engine Knocking
I'm getting a knocking sound from the left side of my engine (standing in front of the car looking back) I've removed the valve cover to check the chain and found the secondary chain to be tight however the primary chain appears to have some slack. i have not remove the the front plate to inspect the full timing system as yet. do you think the knocking is from the slack chain or do i have some other problem?
i was thinking it my be on of the guide on the main chain to the right side that is causing the noise because that chain is a little slack.
thanks!

Is the noise present at all speeds and does it come from the front of the engine? Are the timing marks on the camshafts in alignment? Refer to JTIS or the Workshop Manual for inspection procedure.
It is also possible that you may be hearing a 'knocking' sound caused by a worn gudgeon pin in one of the cylinders.

it is present at all speed, it sounds like it is coming from the front right (passenger Side)of the engine.
sounds alot like this guy, 4.0 just line my engine.
i was told by a friend that i can do a cylinder test with the engine running and removing coils to see it the knock is coming from the cylinder.
i also pulled some codes
P1383
P1388
thanks for the help!
where do i go from here?

Your really wasting your time until ALL the tensioners and chains and guides have been replaced. A lot of people sneak by just doing the secondary ones that are easier to get at as they are under the cam covers. That's a short cut so you can dump the car NOT a permanent repair.
This is a very tough DIY repair but can be done. At a shop it will be a multi-thousand dollar repair. IF you can find a shop who can do it right and have all the special tools required.
Do you want to sink that much money in a worthless car?
Do you have the JTIS yet?
Are you willing to learn enough to do the repair yourself?

Based on the video, it seems you have a worn gudgeon pin or rod bearing. Since the noise seems to be from the top of the engine, I believe it is a gudgeon pin that is worn.
The engine must be disassembled and repaired, but given the low value of the S-Type, it may be best to either find a used engine or sell it for parts.
