Default S Type Vacuum Leak

Greetings all. My 2003 S-Type V6 base had a P0174 & P0171 fault code, it would stall at traffic lights, RPM's surged intermittently, and the heater would not come on. I found a vacuum problem near the firewall. I disconnected an elbow hose which had a vacuum present and plugged it. This the elbow is connected to a long plastic vacuum hose with p/n XR8E-6758-BG (Actually WERS #,see https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...-number-59166/). Now problem has cleared up, heater comes on and car idles just fine & the check engine light is off. This elbow plugs into a rubber enlarger piece which makes up to a metal tubing junction which makes like a 90 deg turn towards the front of the car and then another rubber hose connects to it where my leak is present. I have heard of a top & bottom elbow causing such issues and wonder if my problem here is the bottom elbow? My vacuum diagram does not seem to display this; while it appears to originate like the vapor mngt valve line, its destination is elsewhere. To identify the leak, I literally had to lie on my stomach on top of the engine to be able to get my arm in and around to feel this rubber hose. Do I have to remove the intake manifold to repair this? Please advise as to minimal disassembly to gain access to this or is it worth having a repair shop handle this? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The 3.0 Litre V6 has two hoses in the crankcase control system that can over time perish and crack. The upper one shown in your photo is a simple replacement, while the other one is rather involved requiring removal of the upper and lower inlet manifolds.

The lower hose is elbow-shaped having a part no. of XR845730 or similar based on the VIN for your car. While you're in that far, you may also want to change the sealing gasket on the the oil separator the hose attaches to as they are prone to seepage.

Pretty sure this is in the FAQs. Yes the manifold has to come off and there are threads about it. Next stop the FAQs I think or hang a day or so in case a 3.0 owner says otherwise. Posts by Rick (joycesjag) are what you want.

One additional point to pay attention to is the engine number as I found there are two different types of inlet manifold gasket styles for the mating surface between the upper and lower manifolds when I replaced these hoses for a friend on her 3.0 Litre.

NB, thanks for the info, I was about to ask about manifold gaskets since I found some on ebay. I guess I'll verify with the dealer the part numbers. Are there any other gaskets/parts I should have on hand for such an operation? Would you happen to have the part number to what I’m calling the enlarger in my drawing? Sorry not a mechanic so excuse my terminology.

JagV8, thanks for the reply. I did spend some time searching vacuum leaks on this site before subscribing but concentrated my search in the S Type area. Will look again.

NB, found the part number of what I called enlarger, breather hose C2S50039 so disregard this question.

godelbor, here is what you need: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ics-faq-52720/

If you do not see the pics you REALLY need to follow forum protocol and go to the "New Member Section" and introduce yourself!

And NBCat, there is no difference in any gaskets (seals) from MY (Model Year atleast North America versions) 2003 through 2008, or vacuum lines for the matter. The preface lift 3.0's are a different animal.

True, and the 3.0 V6 I replaced the hoses on for my friend is a 2001 MY S-Type, which had the later individual seals.

I've found over the years that when obtaining parts it's always best to have the VIN and, if possible, engine number in my back pocket just in case!

NB Thanks again for the info.
Joy, Sorry I was well aware of the protocol when I first applied but returned to the forum many days later and forgot about the guidelines. Another major mistake I have made is I listed the wrong year for my S Type, it is a '02 not an '03. Luckily it appears the advice I have received is still valid. I have now introduce myself in the new member area. Thanks.

Not a major mistake.

In the link I provided is another link that is on 2002's and older 3.0s provided by Gus. That elbow is a very common issue on your MY.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Default Cost?

@ godelbor ... How much did this repair cost you or did you do it yourself, and if so how much time did it take and what did the parts cost? Thanks

Default Having same problem with vaccum leak

Hello all,

S type-1100 here. I too own a S-type 3.0 Sports package and I am having the same problem. I took my car in to have it serviced (oil and spark plug change) and when I picked my car up it was running fine. Two days later as I warmed the engine early morning to head in to work, the engined stalled while sitting in my driveway. It fired back up and didnt do it again for the rest of the day. Same thing happen the very next day.

On the third day it did it again as well as why I was sitting at a traffic light in idle. When I got to my office and checked under the hood I heard a vacumm leak and found that as I move the small rubber peice around that godelbor has photos the leak would go in and out.

I take the mechanic probably caused the rubber fitting to crack while removing the manifold to get to the left side spark plugs. Is it safe to un-plug this part an plug up as Godelbor did until I can locate the correct part to replace it?

Read up on (use Search)
hose elbow
hose leak
and similar words

I think there are 2 that probably need replacing.

It's also possible, but much less likely, that you have an O2 sensor going bad.

Default Jaguar S type with air leak

Hi All
I have a 2001 (51 Plate) S type. It has the V6 3ltr engine in and I have an air leak problem. The inlet seals have been replaced, the injector seals have been replaced, the plugs have been replaced. my mech is at a loss as to what to try now. He has checked all of the vac pipes and all seem fine. Any help you can give would be appreciated. The car has been at the garage 3 weeks now after it's MOT. Help!

Cheers

Geoff

Welcome to the forum Geoff,

Please post an intro in the new members section when you can.

Has the mechanic done a smoke test? Did he replace the elbow under the manifold when the seals were done?

joycesjag ( and others)...You all have been helping me with jakesdad 2005 s type 3.0 leans, and I have been advised by you that 2005 3.0 does not have a vacuum hose under the intake manifold, yet here it says all are same 2003 -2008?.
it's crazy how many threads there are about 0171 and 0174 on these cars.
op....I will keep watching this to see your outcome. I still havnt quite won my battle. Good luck.

The pre-2003 USA (2002.5MY UK) 3.0 engines have that hose. The later cars do not.

What DTCs are stored in the system? Is the MIL on?

Did the garage replace the breather hose underneath the lower inlet manifold and the IMT o-rings?
