Default Shifter prob - no 2nd selectable

Hi there

a new day and a new problem with my old cat:

I can manually select the 2nd gear with the shifter. Everything else is working fine, but the lamp sticks with 3rd and I can't really reach the 2nd...it's like pressing against a rubber part.

I replaced the springs of my 5R55N transmission. 1999 3.0l v3. Just S1, S3, S2.

No problems while driving - neither with D or (S)port.

Anyone any ideas on what the problem might be: shifter, gearbox or belt?

thanks in advance

Yep, two of them. And the 1999 is the troublemaker

Might be the shift cable - they tend to stretch. Might adjust, else replace.

Many thanks for the advice - will try to adjust the cable tomorrow morning.

The two bolts on the bottom are tight.

shifter cable plate mounted with two bolts

There are HUNDREDS of TSBs in the forum archives. I uploaded several hundred and many others have added to the collection.

There's all kinds of information, but does anyone ever look there?

Yep, there a lot of documents. Workshop guide, technical guide and more.

But how useful is it, when you are not an mechanic or engineer or former Jag employee and don't understand why there are sometimes comments that the shifter cable is only relevant for P-N-R-D and not for 2nd or 3rd selectable gear on the left side?

Or if it is mandatory to remove the neutral safety switch / rotary switch / selector switch before the cable can be connected to the selector arm or not.

I'm happy that are tons of documents and details available, but there are so many threads without the final confirmation of the TO, that it can be very confusing ...to not see the forest for the trees...

I did exactly as advised and now the 2nd gear is working as expected. Thanks, you saved me a lot of trouble and dollars!

The rotary switch doesn't need to be removed. I needed 1 hour to remove the console, lift the car, replace and afterwards to adjust the cable.
