Default Steering rack replacement

I recently installed a rebuilt rack. On stands I worked steering back and forth apx 30 times before starting engine but when I started engine and turned the wheel it shudders. Can I have gotten something wrong in bleeding system?

Welcome to the forum Mrc134,

You've already posted an Intro so I've moved your question from New Member Area - Intro a MUST to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Download "JTIS" for free here or at jagrepair.com. Follow the proper procedures it entails. Bob's yer uncle

You need to vacuum bleed your steering system with a special adaptor and a hand held vacuum pump. Cannot bleed by turning wheel and if you try to drive with the shudder might as well kiss that replacement rack bye bye...

Default Steering rack resolved

I wish to thank you for your reply. And not completely literate with forum life I apologise to members for any protocol infraction. I think the forum is great and love to see people help one another. After 17 spinal surgeries I cannot afford to pay costly repairs so I do them myself. Again thanks for your help! I hope I can return the favor to someone soon.

Did you resolve the problem?

When I did my rack all I had to do is operate the steering from stop to stop slowly and between each operation check the steering fluid level and all was good.

Default Steering rack

I purchased a rebuilt rack and installed it and on stands moved wheel from stop to stop . After joining the forum I vacuumed at the resivour and when turning steering with engine running it still shutters. Haven't had much luck yet. My back problems give me limited time so will try again tomorrow. Thanks to all!

I would have replaced the rack and PAS pump with a 2001-2002 ZF rack and got rid of the stupid bleed procedure headache!

I hated doing the 2000MY S-Type steering repairs when I worked at the dealer.

The PAS pump, Rack and pressure hose are the only things different on the car.
The later parts can be fitted to make life easy.

The bleed procedure is specific and patience 'trying'.
DO NOT turn the wheel until ALL the air is bled from the system.
It will eventually function properly but several attempts might be necessary before the air is expelled.
