Red face Strange beeping noise...please help [Update with VIDEO]

2001 S-type 3.0

I have been living with this annoying beeping noise for the past year but it is driving me nuts! And my passengers too.

The beeping is behind the steering wheel. Around the instrument cluster.

Beeps at Engine startup for 30 seconds at a time.
Each beep lasts for 1 second and beeps 5 times per episode before a short pause.
It beeps a total of 6 episodes.
It then stops after 30 seconds.

It will beep again after every 30 minutes of driving! Repeating the same routi e. It beeps While driving!

Soooo annoying! And I can't figure it out.

It is not the backup sensor.
It is not seat belt beep but may sounds like it.
It has NO relation to outside temperature, fan, AC, alarm, radio or lock!

Please help.

Update with youtube video and sound

Youtube link: Jaguar S-type 2001 3.0 Annoying Beeping Sound Diagnostic - YouTube

The sounds at the beginning of the video are normal: Door open sound and Key On Sound. All normal.

The annoying sound comes on after engine starts and stays on for 30 seconds at a time. It will repeat every 30 minutes while driving.

It is NOT the seat belt sound. 2001 doesn't have seat belt sound and you can see that I put on my seat belt when I was driving and the seat belt light was OFF and it still sounds!

It is NOT the reverse proximity acoustic sensors. I can turn that OFF and drive forward (not reverse) and it will still sound.

Try looking at the shift linkage. It will beep if the car isn't in park... so maybe it is something to do with that.

Based on the intervals though, it sounds more like an issue with a sensor for the seat belts.

Thanks for the reply

Can it be the parking sensor? Because it will still beep while driving at freeway speeds.

It cannot be seat belt beep because my model year is 2001. Seat beep wasn't implemented until at least 2004.

Honestly, if it was me I would pull the shift bezel and jack up the car and make sure that the linkage cable bolts were tight and that everything was lined up good.. Again, if it was my car that would be the first place I looked.

Second would be the back up sensors. You can tell a failed sensor by listening closely to each one for a clicking sound, I believe...

You could also unplug the module for the sensors.

the park aid speaker is in the back package shelf, the front(if equipted) is in front. There was an issue yrs ago with a handfull of Stype giving random beeos. But not the frequency youre speaking of. And Jaguar never came out wikth a fix I heard of. I had a customer that had it and she just ignored it and many repair attemps. I believe you have a speaker in the inst pack for tunr signal, seat belts key in ign etc..(Im not looking at a wiring diag at home) But if theres something that triggering that internal speaker...............

Thanks for the reply guys.

I will try to record it but how can i post it?

I'll probably do a youtube upload.

Yes, the frequency is very exact: 30 seconds at start up and at exactly every 30 minutes intervals each at 30 seconds.

This is interesting if all else fails.

How would I do that? Can you point me to the right direction?

Thanks!

Do the early cars definitely NOT have the seat belt warning? Was it maybe settable by the dealer / country-specific?

What's described does sound like maybe the seat belt warning.

The module is in the spare tyre well on the left side, but as Brutal pointed out the speaker is in the rear parcel shelf, so that's probably not your problem.

Hello, I just bought my first Jaguar yesterday, a 2004 3.0 V6 Sport Plus, and it has the same issue, only I would describe as ‘chimes’ rather than ‘beeps’. Oh, and I agree it is bloody annoying. I am certainly no expert but my research leads me to believe that this is the air bag warning audible alarm. I think I have the same issue. From what I gather there is probably a fault with one of the air bag sensors and the air bag warning light bulb has probably failed so it reverts to the chimes. I have no idea how to fix it, but maybe it can point some of you experts in the right direction.

Did you check the linkage like I suggested?

Umm.. You do know it is real bad to run the car that low of fuel.

Have you taken the car to a dealer and have them look at it?

The fuel gauge is on half full, or half empty, up to you.

You could try this, not sure if it works with s-types

To enable or disable the seat belt warning chime...
1. Ensure the front passenger seat is unoccupied.

NOTE: Steps two to five must be completed within 60 seconds.

2. Turn the ignition to the RUN position (do not start the engine).

3. Buckle the driver safety belt buckle and wait until the seat belt warning lamp extinguishes.

4. Unbuckle the driver safety belt buckle and wait until the seat belt warning lamp illuminates.

5. Repeat Steps three and four a further eight times.

6. When the driver safety belt buckle is unbuckled for the ninth time a single chime will be heard. The single chime is acknowledgement that the beltminder feature has been disabled.

The beltminder feature will be disabled until the above process (Steps one to six) are repeated. Upon repeating the process the beltminder feature will be reactivated.
