Smile Technical Bulletin re Trans Growling

I have a 2005 S-type and recently came across a "Technical Bulletin" (S307-11) on this forum site, issued by Jaguar. It sounds like something I have noticed with my vehicle, a growling noise when the vehicle gets above around 40 mph. It says under "warranty information" that it needs a procedure called "re-configure TCM" that is done through the diagnostic system and takes less than half an hour. My question is, is this something that would need to be done by an actual Jaguar dealership or could it be done by Ford? The instructions are on the bulletin. I'm not that close to a Jaguar dealership. Has anyone had this procedure done?

The trans reconfig will need JAGUAR SOFTWARE. The Ford Dealer would have to have different software for the diagnostic machines they have. They likely have the correct computer but not the software.

IDS with a VCM is the common setup (Ford, Mazda, Jaguar, Land Rover) but JLR software is unique.

That TSB address issues during warm up only and only while in 4th gear. Is that what you have?

All I know is that there is a growling noise when I first get above 60-70 kmh, that goes away when I've driven a bit at that speed. I will be taking the beast to a repair shop for another problem tomorrow and will ask them about it. Maybe it's something else, or nothing to worry about. Thanks for the replies.

It could be the rear-end whine originally covered in TSB 2050032 and updated in JTB00053v2. Usually described as a consistent whine or drone at about 60 mph. The fix is a new rear axle assembly and axle housing bushing. Very expensive and highly unlikely that a Jaguar dealership would cover the costs now that our cars are long past their warranty periods and this was simply a TSB, not a recall....

So hold it manually in 4th gear and find out.

The Ford people said it's something Jaguar has to address, so I'm still in the dark. It's definitely not a persistent whining, more like a grinding growl that only lasts briefly. It had me quite alarmed when I first heard it, but the car has been running fine all these months.

However it's a leaky beast and I'm trying to get rid of it. They found a number of leaks I didn't even know it had that could be just hose connections or something more serious, which they recommended Jaguar deal with. I need something less temperamental and more reliable, and it needs someone more mechanically minded and Jaguar savvy. It's been one thing after another and I refuse to put any more money into it. It's been interesting, but it has to go.

Happy New Year and thanks for all the help.

No idea why you let a Ford dealer look at it. They'd know as much as the kid at Tim Horton's drive through. Did you try testing it in 4th gear as suggested above?

All 14 year old cars will have wear and tear issues. No surprise there.

If you prefer the Ford guys I think your best bet is to sell the car. It's going to get expensive otherwise.

People here will try to help if you are open to ideas about your Jaguar S-Type.

This Ford place was recommended to me because they have mechanics who have worked on Jaguars (Ford having owned Jaguar), and have a reputation for being more honest than a lot of other repair shops. It's also a lot more convenient to get to. Having said that, if I were to keep the vehicle, which is unlikely, I would take it to Jaguar. As I said, there has been one problem after another with it, each one seemingly minor but the repair costs add up. I may have a Jaguar, but I'm not exactly wealthy.

As for the growl, it only happens at close to 70 kmh, which is probably about when it shifts to 4th gear, and it goes away within a minute. This TSB sounded like it might be getting at the problem.

Out of curiosity, what would Jaguar charge, more or less, just to have the vehicle inspected? Some places will do it for reasonable rates, or only charge for the actual repairs. And what sort of warranty do they give you in case the problem persists even after repairs? I'm wary of vehicle repair shops in general after many bad experiences with this and other vehicles.

When you've lost confidence it sounds like your best bet is to sell it.
