Default Transmission fault

Hello everyone
on my 2004 str
I have been trying to nut out a transmission fault
First of all no gearbox fault on Instrument cluster
transmission when in Reverse or drive works perfectly

The fault code is p0706
transmission range sensor circuit range/performance
What is happening is driving along transmission shift perfectly
Then when I decide to use j gate from D to 5th nothing
5th to 2nd will not light up red and transmission will not shift though the gears
same as the s button will not light up

Then if I pull over and turn engine off and re start
everything works perfectly again for a while
Even when 5 to 2nd not working
Drive works perfectly kickdown fine as well
i have even swaped j gates from my other two s types
but still the same thing happens
and my spear j gate

Transmission was serviced by a zf Authorized company
When I was rebuilding car
including valve body rebuild
Has anyone else experienced this problem
If so could you kindly let me know
What you did to fix the problem
Thanking you
Darrol

The tcm attached to the valve body is having problems where thecomputer picks up transmission range via the slider controlled by the shift cable. I had the same issue and sent the tcm to softelectronis in bulgaria and they fixed it for 700 dollars US. Including shipping. Google them and then contact them for more info

rotating the jgate shouldn’t affect the brown range sensor hooked up to the manual valve

0705 is flagged for a tcm range switch electrical fault and puts you straight into gearbox fault. 0706 is flagged when the jgate disagrees with TCM onboard range switch, say you have the gate in drive when the transmission is in neutral etc etc

hi no
P/R/N/D all work as they should no problem that side
No gearbox fault on Instrument cluster
Sometimes when you use manual side
The 5/4/3/2 will not work as well as the s button
They do not light up red and won't change up or down manually
but when turn car off then on they have full functionality again

thanks
would be quicker and cheaper for me to just drop another transmission in it
shipping costs from new Zealand are extremely expensive
Thanking you

At least check the 2 bolts (8mm hex) holding the shift cable to the trans (under car) are present and not loose.

are you talking about the metal slider attached the the rectangular plastic thing with magnetic looking strips on it. Best i can describe it. The slider has an indent/space for the shift cable fork to rest in

Put my JLR IDS SDD MONGOOSE on today
This is where I'm stumped
Went into transmission module and scanned
Then software said to test all the gears
everything worked as it said
took car for a one hour drive everything fine
until 10 minutes from home then I lost 5/4/3/2
Stopped car started car everything back to normal

So going to put my spear transmission in tomorrow at work
Thanking you
