Default Transmission fluid

Hey guys, I wanted to have my transmission fluid changed so I contacted my local jag dealer and they wanted $75 a quart which I think is crazy, I don't know if they just slap a jag logo on the bottle and sell it for so much or is it really special than all the other ATFs out there? He also said it was mineral stuff. what type of fluid does the jag use? is it the dexron or mercon? Is there a more afordable altenative that is the same? I asked at a precision autocenter and the guy said that they use atf that is equvilent to jaguar specs and that they don't put in anything that shouldn't go in there. so im thinking about taking it to him. What should I do? would I be able to do the job my self or should I leave it up to the pros?

First thing to do: read existing threads about this and especially the FAQs. That's why the old stuff is on here rather than being deleted. Anyone who puts in a bit of effort can benefit from those who went through things in the past and suffered being trailblazers. The forum's Search is there for a good reason or glance at thread titles if you don't like Search.

Many many discussions on this issue... I hate to say it but do a simple search "ZF6HP26 Fluid" be ready to do alot of reading!!!

I might add, if you procede with the fluid change with pan/filter (1 piece deal) change out the rubber electrical sleeve!

Here a link on DIY, its not a bad job, just scary the first time you do it, then it becomes less intimidating. It can be done on your back in about an hour and a half and will save you BIG bucks!

Also some reading in the S Type FAQ Section

David,

This subject has been covered extensively on the forum, a search will provide more info and opinion than you can deal with.
I don't think we need another thread so I'm going to close this one.
