Default Transmission fluid level question

I found some dripping from the pipes running to radiator from trans so I have a small leak of trans fluid. The new trans has 35 thousand new miles on it and my fear is I do not know how long the leak has been going on because it was leaking on the shield under the car. So, if I jack it up on all fours and then let it drain for a day or two, the recommendation has always been to measure what you take out and then put that amount back. That does not work for me at this time. So besides draining from the plug, can anyone explain or direct me to a thread, exactly how do I get all the fluid out so I can add the exact amount recommended in the book. Or if I remove the trans pan and change the filter which is the plan, will that over a day or two allow all the fluid to leak out? Thanks.

You're not meant to measure what comes out and put the same back in, even with no leak, though it's not a terrible idea. You're supposed to fill as per the details in JTIS. I think there's a FAQ, probably by tdc. Can't recall if he followed the official instructions.

If I recall correctly the trans in the 2000 3.0 is a Ford product. To check that you will see a sticker on the side of the trans that says Ford or Lincoln. This is a link Ford 5R55N transmission that should help but please check the sticker on the side of the trans to verify.

And this might be a good addition http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-5R55N-T...104398&vxp=mtr

Have a look on Sonnax - Aftermarket replacement transmission, torque converter, and high performance automotive parts they have lots on the 5R55N

Oh, and:
Ford 5R55N transmission
JagFORUM Logon
(need to register for the latter)

It's a common trans and lots of gearbox shops will know it well.
