Default transmission oil pan leak

I have been chasing leaks... Coolant and oil.. Coolant fixed, oil fixed.. but during these fixes. I realized what was dropping on the ground was transmission fluid from the pan. So I need a gasket. But my question is.. when changing the gasket won't all the fluid drain. With no dip stick and no way to add transmission fluid how is this to be done?

The procedure is outlined in the Workshop Manual and on other threads. Look in the 'sticky' section and you may find a link to a youtube video that explains how to service the ZF gearbox.

Would it be prudent to go to a transmission shop you know, and let them fix the gasket, change the fluid and check out the tranny for you?

don't suspect only the gasket. Your plastic pan could have a crack..

Or, the electrical sleeve could be leaking. The leak travels the top of the pan from rear to front and drips off the corner.

I'd change pan, sleeve and get some new lifeguard 6 fluid in the girl...

That's exactly how it's leaking, and exactly what my plans are. Gotta take care of my baby

Yes and very expensive. It seems to me that prices seem to elevate quite significantly when they see what vehicle it is..

...and the filter (usually included with the pan), and the bolts holding the pan, and of course the gasket. You'll rest easy after that.

the plastic transmission pan has the filter built in. Also, good point in replacement pan bolts (get the newer T-40 size trans pan bolts) you'll thank us later...

To answer the OP. You will not loose ALL the ATF, what you will loose is about 4 qts. or so. Yes there is no dipstick. As mentioned above many places explain how to fill the transmission to the correct level here, there and everywhere (kinda). You can get a kit that has everything you need from www.thectsc.com. You can go a little bit cheaper route if you do not choose to use the LifeGuard6 fluid.

BEFORE draining ATF. Make sure you break loose the "fill plug" first! From the factory it is tightened incredibly tight, a few had made this mistake in the past, they drained to fluid then found that they could not loosen/remove fill plug.

If your vehicle has been a Florida car since new you should not have any surprises with the pan Torx screws. Our "Northern" friends have the issue with the salt and corrosion on top the screw threads as they are through bored the transmission housing and pick up a lot of crud.

If the car has been leaking fluid you are sure to be low on transmission fluid. The only question is by how much?

So don't delay because running the transmission low on fluid will damage any transmission.

Yes you can do it at home but I DIY almost everything but I had Brutal do this service.

Looks like you are too far away. He is in the Houston area and works at a Jaguar dealership.

That one is not compatible according to the listing. Not sure which part of the kit is wrong?

This one "says" it's compatible and that's a great price but has anyone used one these aftermarket pans?

A ZF pan only can be had for about $100 from Parts Geek.

The sleeve isn't that expensive to add.

I'll be facing this in about a week after my other repairs here at Fluid Leaks Central are finished.

I'm going to use Redline or Mercon SP for the fluid though as both meet OEM specs and with Mercon a LOT less money.

Here's another but it's almost twice as much! What's the difference?

Auto Trans Filter Kit ATP B 409 | eBay

This is much better:

70 bucks for a pan from jsdautparts on ebay. Make sure you replace the hex bolts or find a kit package with them. I used Valvoline Maxlife synthetic which meets shell spec. I had a hard shift and this made all the difference.

I bought this one yesterday and spent considerable time chasing down the compatibility by the individual part numbers in the kit. $82 and it has everything you need except the fluid.

I'm hoping everything works OK, only the mechatronic seal adapter is possibly different but I think not.

I hope to pick up a 12 pk case of Redline D6 ATF today for $99 which is way more than enough as a complete fill is 10.6 quarts and it looks like no one even uses that much on here. That would be with a flushing machine.
