Trying to find out more about the Type S
I'm in the market for a weekend car and I just discovered the Type S was within my price range yesterday. I have several questions about all 3 engines, particularly the V6.
1. I've read in reviews that the V6 launches the Type S to 60 in about 8.3 seconds. This V6 has 240 HP. Given that a 3.0L has 240 HP, I imagine that Jaguar did a good job of squeezing a lot of power out of that engine. That being said, it sounds to me like there isn't much power to be gained n/a from that car. Am I right on this?
2. Are the repairs for the car expensive?
3. At what RPM does the 3.0L V6 stay at when going 60 mph? I'd also like to know what RPM the V8 stays at at 60. I'm looking for a quiet, luxurious, highway cruiser.
Thanks for your time. I saw a Jaguar Type S on Craigslist for 3,000 and to be honest, I'm tempted.(If it passes my inspection that is.)

No doubt owners will jump in shortly but to give you somewhere to start, have a look at the FAQ's from this link:

Hi Spectre-
I'll comment breifly.
1) the three engine options are all in a 'high state of tune' as delivered from the factory- although there are some modifications available, expect them to cost in the thousands of dollars but return only small gains.
2) cost of repairs are proportionally more than what they might cost on a 'regular' car like a Honda or Chev
3) I have the 4.2L engine in mine, it turns around 1500 RPM or so at 60MPH.
$3000 won't buy much of an S-type if you're expecting a trouble free car in good condition. Best look and learn a lot more before being tempted to open your wallet.

Welcome to the forum,
I don't know what the cruising rpms are but either engine will fit the bill for a quiet luxurious cruiser.
The best advice I have is to aim for a 2003 or newer model, this was the facelift MY and the cars had a lot of the earlier problems resolved.

Welcome! READ as much as you can here and also some reviews online from Road & Track and other publications. Spend as much as you can up front and you will be better off if you choose to buy a Jag. A well maintained car is a good find. Ask if they have service records, etc.
It's an "S-Type", not a "Type-S".
I regularly have to clarify to others that my Jag is an " S-Type 'R' " and not a "S 'Type-R'".
$3,000 might get you into an S-Type, but if you're tight on budget and not prepared to put in some time and money in getting someone else's worn out S-Type into shape, you may consider passing.

Our 2005 S-Type 3-litre V6 tachs at less than 2,000 rpm at 60 mph. That speed is effortless and quiet for our car. I bought it as my wife's highway cruiser in December 2008 with 18,000 miles on it. It now has just over 71,000 miles and has been a great vehicle for us....
These are great bang-for-the-buck highway cruisers as long as you can DIY the maintenance and repairs. They all have a number of known issues that must be monitored and eventually repaired, so DIY maintenance is the absolute key towards keeping your costs down....
As has been previously stated, stick to 2003-or-newer. My research in December 2008 prior to purchasing ours convinced me to go with a 2005-or-newer. I'm still glad that I did....

It depends on what you expect from your 'weekend car'. If you are going to be taking long trips or country drives, the V-6 is excellent on the highway. If fact, S-Types are really made for the highway. If you want an aggressive machine to pound the back-roads and frighten small creatures, then go straight for the 'R'. Any way you slice it, town or country, you will get looks in an S-Type.
How does the reliability of the S-type R compare to the XJR? Are they fairly similar? I know the XJR has an air suspension with a tendency for the compressor to fail. What quirks does the S-type R have that the XJR doesn't?
