If you can confirm, that the rattle comes somewhere from the timing chain, your previous assumption is correct. HOWEVER, I'd like to throw it out the there in the ring that it could be something completely different. I suspected my timing chain on my X308 all along and never thought it could be something else. The rattle was there for about 10 seconds after initial start of the engine, and then gone. I swapped chain, tensioners and guide. Rattle was still there, BECAUSE to was one of the catalysts! The honeycomb in one of the catalysts was falling around completely loose inside of its housing. I found this unbelievable fault by using the mechanic's stethoscope. Hence, I swapped both catalysts and the rattle was gone.

PS: I just realized that you have an STR, hence, a V8, which would be pretty much the same engine as in my X308 (apart from the "R" part)...
What’s crazy is that my drivers side cat has internally fail I believe that’s the rattle, any ways I am replacing with high flow if it isn’t the start up issue I’ll just redo the timing with vvt install

Indeed, the rattle could be your catalyst.
As I wrote, I replaced my timing chain kit first, and I was not bothered too much in regards of thinking back then that I did that now for nothing, because even if the rattle did not come from the timing chain, my X308 timing chain had still the OE tensioners with brown plastic (bakelite), and that means, it needs to be swapped - rattle or not. And the guide (again: bakelite) inside were pretty much broken all over. I am not sure if the S-Type V8 was OE fitted with the same unsuitable tensioners and guides as the X308...

In a word... yep. Anything produced prior to 2002 had these.

So they fixed the problem with the plastic tensioners/guides in 2002 for X308 and S-Type V8?
In that case, omgimali might be lucky regarding this timing chain (& tensioner & guides), as his STR seems to be from 2006...
This would point even stronger at the catalysts reg. the rattle...

Peter, the plastic contact parts of the metal backed guides can also fail at advanced mileages. So an examination of the timing chains is always a good idea.

Your 2006 STR has the best timing gear so I would not worry about it. It has happened on later engines (4.2L) but is not common. But there is always a plastic part that runs on the chain itself. So yes they are metal but with plastic wear pads where they contact the chain.

Thanks again Xalty! You sure have the inside info on all these repairs!
That's a new document for me.

I think that is answer. VVT's don't rattle. At least none I've ever heard about. Tensioners.....BIG RATTLE. For a note....if you take the cover off and the tensioner plate is shiny metal, you have a problem and they need to be changed. Changing the top tensioners is real easy. The bottom, not so much.

Sorry, I was going by mine. After hearing the short video, a cam cover would be coming off pretty fast.
