Default Water in trunk, but how?

I was filling up at the gas station today and popped the trunk for no particular reason and to my surprise, it has standing water. It has rained hard these last few days so I know it's rain water, but how did it get into the trunk. The trunk seal is mounted correct and not torn anywhere that I can see.
Suggestions?

Even if the trunk seal looks to be in good shape and seated properly, it is common for them to begin allowing water into the trunk in these older S-Types as the years pass. Some owners are able to repair this issue by carefully removing the trunk seal while noting its correct orientation, carefully cleaning off the old worn-out adhesive on all surfaces, then re-installing the trunk seal using a product such as waterproof RTV silicone (which can be purchased at any home improvement big box store and many big box auto parts stores)....

Give it a shot and report back with your results. But get that water out of your trunk first - it can be very damaging to the vehicle's electrical system....

It can leak around the rear lights also.
A hole in the spare wheel well is a good thing there should be some covered with a patch.

I used to have a 1990 Ford Taurus, and this happened. It turned out, as Norri suggested, to be the tail light seal. A bit of silicone seal fixed it.

I'd say your sunroof drains are blocked. There has been a lot of talk about cleaning them on this forum, take a look.

If you look behind the trim piece on the driver's side of the trunk you will see the drain hose up by the wheel hump. That hose exits into the wheel well and releases the water from one of the sun roof drains there.

Check out this thread for more info:

Specifically, see post #35 for Gus' experience with water leaking at the tail lights.

See post #42 for my experience with the trunk seal. I replaced that and didn't touch anything else. Voila, no more leaks.

The tail lights and the trunk seal appear to be the two main causes.

When the moonroof drains are clogged, rainwater typically winds up underneath the rear seat floorboard carpets....

Inspected and hosed and hosed; I could not reproduce the leak. I popped out the drain plugs and may just leave it at that. After all, this is Southern California, it never rains.

Sounds like a plan.

In the first week of ownership I was horrified to find that pool of water in the boot after driving in heavy rain.
Thanks to forums like this you realise that you are not alone with Jag problems.
My boot leak came from that tail-light area.
Silicon sealer stopped it.
