what happened? window questions
Hi everyone. We just drove our 2000 S-Type 4.0 1k miles to visit the inlaws on vacation. It drove beautifully.
The day after we arrived, we took her to get some ice cream, and as we were parking, I heard a loud BANG - like something hit the window next to me (passenger side) and the window stopped dead, and wouldn't go up any further. It was about three quarters of the way up. Knee jerk responce was to try again, and that made a horrible crunching sound and the window fell down the rest of the way.
Any ideas on what could have gone wrong and how to fix?

It'll be the regulator.
The Lincoln LS part fits and is cheaper.

Thank you. It was hard getting back here, and by the time I did, spouse had taken it in. Their DX was the cable broke, $500. I just wonder about that sound, but I suppose it could have been the cable breaking.
Your getting screwed big time!! Amazon has the entire regulator for about $70. It takes maybe 45 minutes to install. A pretty simple repair. The cable rarely breaks, it's most likely the plastic tabs on the cable.

www.rockauto.com also carries the motor and regulator assembly brand new for about $65 before the Forum Discount! 9595C4D4B2AC - If your not comfortable doing this yourself - there is a good step by step write up on the forum at least purchase the part and make them install it saving you $$$
If you had the dealer do it already, not necessary, but if you are going to do it, a couple of threads on how to here on the site. A pry tool for this is a big help when taking door off.
the other thing I have read is always try to close the door with the window closed.

$500???
No way.
It sounds like your regulator has gone.
I did this very repair 2 days ago - there are two small plastic guides which break into 3 pieces, leaving the cable loose.
I removed regulator (30 mins) inspected system and found the cable was wrapped-up and chewed into motor pulley. Broken guides.
Can you still hear the motor straining?
I wouldn't touch the control button until it's off the door.
