Default What the heck is this?

Today, after repeatedly having my Jag serviced for a "loose gas cap" and the check engine light coming on time and time again, I have a new message. It says INST Fuel and changes numbers underneath it on the left info panel. I'm so tired of this.

INST Fuel = current fuel consumption calculated at three second intervals which is why it will be continually changing.

You don't say what model you drive but on my XK8 the facility is switched on and off by pressing the button on the end of the lighting stalk. Continue pressing to cycle through 'range', 'average fuel', 'inst' and 'average speed' then back to 'odometer'.

I really appreciate the answer. I'll try to fix this when I get back in the car. I'm new to this site but I drive a 2005 S Type and love my S Type Jags. I just don't have a dealership or anyone very knowlegeable about Jags to ask around our area so----here I am! Thanks again

It doesn't need fixing as it's not broken. Have a look at that handbook thing

Er... I wasn't "having a go", just hoping to provide a pointer to where the details are
(which I think the OP realised)

BTW, the loose gas cap sets codes because USA law requires it, under pain of huge fines for the car makers. The law makers are trying to reduce harmful emissions and the gas cap was a source of them.

Where in NC are you at? I'm in the Raleigh/Durham area and can help you out if you every have any problems. I've helped a few members on here. I also have an ELMScan in case your check engine light comes on again I can pull codes.

Nice one Rick. I'm not sure about the making dinner thing though. I barely cook for myself. I do cook a mean bowl of cereal or mac and cheese. Thats bachelor fine dining. I did give the STR a nice wash and wax last weekend. It had been getting neglected with all the nice weather the bike has been getting all the attention. Plus I was upset with her for the restricted performance problem which I'm glad to say is fixed and all it was was the vacuum line.

I seemed to have expanded my repair hobbying to other vehicles now. Our buddy Joel has a CTS now and have already helped him with a headlight bulb replacement which required a front bumper removal. Been working on Civics, Troopers, Saturns and bikes. Maybe I wont have to work a job during school.
