Xenon Headlight out - What to check? / Next steps?

I have an '03 S-Type 4.2 with Xenon headlights. My passenger side headlight has gone out. I know that Xenons typically do not "burn out" so it is probably something electrical or a component has gone bad.
Anyone have any ideas on what (or how) to check? I would love to avoid a $900 trip to the dealer!
Thanks for all the helpful experts on this forum. I very much enjoy doing some "light reading" here.

Try swapping the lights themselves between right and left sides. IF the left is still out after that then you have a bad fuse, ballast, wiring, or relay. IF it lights up then you need new bulbs.
I suggest E-bay, you can get some D2S bulbs is just about any color for cheap (~50 dollars)

I found a pair of S-Type 2005 4.2 HID Xenon replacement bulbs on Ebay for $40.
The only problem is that I can't figure out how to install it. After removing the head cover there is no room to reach behind the lamp assembly to replace the bulb.

Whoops! Looks like I didn't search thoroughly enough. Apparently with the V8 HID especially, one needs to remove the entire bumper to change a bulb.

I used the DS2 bulbs ($58ish for 2 in canada).
Yes you have to remove the bumper and headlight unit to gain access to the rear.
NOTE _ The new bulb will not mount properly if the electrical connector is not attached.
Do both units while you have the bumper off!!

HI @ all!
Do I need D2S Bulps for every S-Type R? Also for euopean ones?
Why are there so much price differences? Just because of the brands or are there some facts I have to look at?
Are 6000K ok? or do I need an other Kelvin bulb?
Thanks a lot!

check the fuse first, if blown replace it.
if the fuse is good check the actual connector, maybe they seperated,
if the connector is fine then check and see if the ballast work. youll need someone to turn on the lights while you have your ears near the ballast.
if it hums, it works. if it doesnt hum, theres your culprit.
if it doesnt hum then its either bad, or not getting power. you can check and see if its getting power with a voltometer READ THIS > do NOT test ANY wiring coming from the ballast. ONLY check wires that LEAD to the ballast.
if it gives voltage then the ballast is bad and youll need replacement.
you can swap the bulbs as mentioned earlier to see if the bulb is bad,
if bulbs are swapped and still no light, it may be the ignitor which houses the bulb. youll need a replacement as well.
original phillips d2s 85122+ bulbs can be purchased on ebay for around $80 shipped. if you have a hardtime finding a pair, or not sure which seller to buy from i can give you the ebay id's of people ive had great experiances with.

since I rebuild broken headlight assemblies on the side. I can tell you that the number 1 thing that goes out in them is usually not the bulb, (burner), but the ballast. And yes to confirm before you start buying parts, swap the burners out side to side. I have yet to ever see a blown fuse for one, but what the hell you can and should check the easiest thing first....
HI,
thaks a lot for the tips!
I'll check the ballast tomorrow! How can I check the connectors?
To swap the left bulp to the right side and the other way round is a good idea, but therefor I need to know if it is possible without takeing the bumper off?
I already checked the fuses, but they seemed to be ok! If they would have been broken, I should see a crack in the metal string...right?
Thanks for your help!

as long as the humming sound is coming from the side that is NOT working , then its most likely the bulb.
once your bumper is removed swap the bulbs left to right and confirm that its the bulb. then replace accordingly.

Pulling the bumper cover is not nearly as hard as it sounds. Max time is about 20 min. if you leave the bottom splash cover attached and just let it lay down in front of the car. Then you open up all the access that you will need to easily swap any components. The screws behind the fender liner (1 per side) are the toughest but their not bad if you turn the front wheels as needed. Once it's done you'll wonder why you didn't just do in the first place.

Hi,
the only thing, which is a bit strange, is, that sometimes, when I turn the light on, the one which usually doesn't work, flares for a very short time and then it is off again.. is this possible when the bulb is bad?
