Default ZF6 transmission-Issue with lower gears

Hi all,

I have noticed that when changing gear, going from 1-2 and 2-3, in both the regular and sport mode, the transmission seems to be slow and confused. I feel like the transmission doesn't change the gear at the right time (the lower gears). I took the S-Type to Jaguar last week and after diagnosis, they are recommending a ZF6 transmission module upgrade, which will cost about 300 bucks. When I asked them the chances of this problem being solved, they said about 30-40%.

So, the upgrade is supposed to "re-teach" the zf6 the correct points of shift as I was told.
My question is, do you all think that's a valid diagnosis and whether the upgrade will actually fix it. I will do the upgrade regardless, but I just want to see if anyone has had the same issue and was told to do it.

A reflash may do the trick. IIRC $300.00 sees a bit steep but you do live in New York. You could also have the ATF level checked at a local transmission shop could be alittle bit less expensive if you are unable to DIY.

Lastly, is this problem new or is the vehicle new to you? You may have whats known as "the lurch". See www.thelurch.com

One more thing how about posting up more pictures of your S Type, it looks to be interestingly customized in a good way.

Thanks for the response and I appreciate the comments; I will take more photos, in fact I have posted some in the album "after some changes". I'm from New York, but I'm currently in Pittsburgh, because of school.
The problem is new, I have had the car only since March and after fixing a lot of leaking issues, throttle body problem and a faulty park brake, this problem with the transmission has now come up.

My original thought was to check the transmission fluid, when I took the car to Jag dealer in Pittsburgh, they said the same old "transmission sealed for life" thing and that they see no evidence of leaking fluid. The price is steep, but I have no choice as I just moved to Pitt and don't really know a lot about mechanics here yet. I will do the upgrade on Monday and I will be hoping; I'll let you all know what happens

One thing is that if the engine has even a quite minor fault it can show in the trans, so I'd check the OBD readings in detail if you're prepared to buy a cheap tool that does "live data" and spend your time seeing what's going on. Check out General Tech area for tool and hunt for fuel trims to see the kinds of things to do.

It may well not be the engine but it's cheap to get something like an elm327 and have a hunt around - just takes time & effort rather than money. Gets you learning how this car and other modern cars work, too

Thank you all so much, I ordered the elm327 online and I should be getting it soon. Meanwhile, I'm in the Jag dealer, getting the zf6 update (reflash) done. Hoping it will fix the issue with the lower gears, if not I will be using the elm327 and of course getting the ATF checked.
Actually, just asked the Jag dealer to check the ATF levels and they said, it was all good.
Thank you all for the responses again.

Er... how quickly did they come back and say ATF level good? The HowTos show how and it's not quick/easy, must be done within specific temp range, plus I reckon they definitely would charge.

What mileage? A transmission fluid change may not cure the problem but if you're in the 80-100 K miles it can't do anything but good.

Jag reflashed my TCM for $150. $300? Sounds like a double dip to me.

Hi all,
I just got her back from the dealer; the reflash helped, though it didn't completely solve the problem. I asked the service rep guy to check the fluid and he said he did; now I didn't believe him either but since the reflash seemed to help, I will give it a couple of days until I get the diagnostic tool in the mail as well, maybe that would give me some better ideas about source of the problem.
It's definitely shifting better now though, which is good, oh and btw I paid exactly 240.00+120 for diagnosis.

I will see how she does tomorrow.

Daria, glad to hear that she is running better.

As JagV8 stated earlier you may have a possible vacuum leak that is causing the minor shift issue now. With your MY (model year) the IMT O-rings are a known failure point with the V6 3.0. Here is a link to check them out, if you can open the hood you can do the O-ring check:

Besure to check out the above.
