Default Need ABS Pump for 1990 XJS

The ABS pump on my 1990 XJS has gone bad and I need a replacement.

It seems that most of the used ones on eBay are from the XJ6. The Accumulator ball is on the opposite side of the pump and the brake fluid high pressure line is also opposite compared the the XJS version. The electric motor and pressure switch are the same but the pump has a different casting. They are not interchangeable.

Please contact me if you have an XJS pump to offer.

Thank you!

Mark

I have no personal experience of ABS fixing. But in the absence of other knowledgeable replies: from the photos it looks like the two are identical except for the positioning of the bulb on the casting. Would it be possible to drill and tap the saloon casting and move the bulb, and put a threaded bung into the original hole? Alternatively cannibalise the two somehow to get the working bits into the XJS casting?

It does not appear possible to drill the casting. The bulb has a special pin mounted in the casting that extends into the bulb. It would take a lot of work to recreate that mounting.

If you remove the electric motor you have some access to the pump mechanism. The problem is a metal plate that appears to be staked in place. I'm trying to find a way to remove the plate without damaging it and allow it to be re-installed after the pump has been rebuilt.

Behind the plate are the pump parts. I am sure that I could use parts from a good pump to replace the bad ones (assuming the casting has not been damaged). All I need to deal with is that metal plate.

I will post some pictures as soon as I can and update with any progress.

In the meantime I would still like to source a proper pump so I can get the car back on the road. Then I can work on the old pump at my leisure.

Mark,

I saw an XJS at the weekend with an XJ6 pump fitted. It was just turned around 180 degrees and a small bit of angle iron used as a bracket to hold it in place with original mount bracket.

Seems like this would be a good way to get the car running if you really can't find an XJS one from a breakers.

I unwittingly replaced mine with one from an XJ6 and after installation discovered that it didn't quite fit--until I bent the mounting bracket.

So, similar to above idea, might be a way to go.

So I guess because of the pin you can't put a 45' fitting on the ball.

Mark,
What is the problem with your original pump? is it mechanical or electrical?

Mechanical. The impeller in the pump has worn to the point that it cannot create fluid pressure. The pump is constructed in such a way that you nearly have to destroy it in order to get access to the impeller. The pump was just not designed to allow replacement of the impeller.

So I either need to find a good pump or an entire motor/pump assembly.

I know that i could cobble a mount and make an XJ6 pump work but I consider that a last resort solution. I prefer to use the correct part if I can find one.

I do have one on my 90 parts car. 70k+ miles on the car, not running, so I don't know what kind of shape it's in. It would probably be next week before I could get it removed.

That would be great!

I might be interested in other parts you have. When you are ready send me a PM and let me know what you have available.

Thanks!
