I've always been into fast saloons (sedans) and fast hatches and I had an even more rare Cosworth, the 3 litre V6 Granada Cosworth. But the F type is for fans of sexy 2 seaters.
The new RS is gorgeous !!!!! Seen two round here already.

I4 = $59,900
V6 manual = $61,400
V6 auto = $62,700

Add maybe $1k of yearly savings with gas and insurance combined, which is generous, and I just don't think there's reason to expect a significant increase in U.S. sales. What may happen is an increase in V6 msrp... but that won't make more sales.

 

I have a Fiesta ST at the moment as my daily driver, but I'm hankering after the RS so-ooooo bad...

 

I live not far from the Cosworth factory, got family working there. I was sat in my car outside our GP practise last week and this brand spanking new black Focus reversed in next to me and I knew immediately it was an RS. I had to get out of the car to have a closer look. Just stunning !

I always fancied a Lotus Carlton back in the early 90s it was a bonkers saloon car. I love sleepers.
I had to make do with a Pug 309 gti 2 door.

 

USA Pricing for the 4 cylinder turbo is $68500 for the coupe and $71500 for the convertible.

 

Here you go. He only got a few shots and they didn't open the bonnet. Styling as expected. He liked the seats and felt there was a bit more leg room but he couldn't be sure. They had no literature available as they were pushing FPace stuff. Fpace got best car for the show. He said the 4 cylinder looked good to him and his dialog with the reps was about the performance being similar to the six but with better mileage. They are going to be sending him a lot more of the details in his press kit. I'll share what he gets.

 

Also note the single centre mount exhaust.

 

Still more than $60k+ way more than a corvette. If it means still having F Types fine. Sales are way slower than first 2 years. No great resale value either.

That single exhaust (the same shape as the seat inserts?); and especially combined with the body-colored rear diffuser (3 wide-mouth bass)? No thank you.

Of course it's all very subjective. There is something to be said for less is more.

 

Ummm.... I know I'm late to this thread but *who* is going to buy a 4 cyl F type? This is marketing stupidity to me. I would never buy or consider this version of the car and unfortunately it feels like it's going to devalue the higher-end cars as well....

I believe the roof is solid metal?

 

It is a solid roof. No inserts no sunroof. All metal and stiff according to my son.

 

My understanding was that the roof panel wasn't structural.

 

Not by me. I don't have any prejudice against 4 cylinders. I'd even consider one if it were enough lighter. It really depends on your needs (desires). I didn't need the extra power of the 8 at the expense of weight. I'd definitely trade even some of my V6 power for some lightness, but it'd need to be enough lightness to notice in 2nd and 3rd gear twisties.

 

How confident are you in that math? That would make the 4 cylinder more expensive than the base V6.

 

I knew this was coming, but it's still pretty silly considering how many engines they have. The I4 is fine, but why not eliminate the 340hp V6? Bump the 380 -> 400hp in the S trim, leave the R where it is. This smacks of chasing Porsche, where the base Cayman, S, GTS, and GT4 feature incremental power upgrades. Oh well, no reason for me to stick with the brand after my lease is up in a year.

 

Agree with the vette comment. A 4 banger for more than a well appointed vette seems insane... For a guy with a healthy ego anyway..

I really think they are targeting female Porsche boxter owners with this. The exhaust is very Porsche, the pricing is close.. The boxter is gutless, so the ftype comes out looking good there.

But..l. I just don't understand the I4 when you can detune the v6. What's the goal? The car is so heavy, I don't think the I4 is a HUGE driving difference.

If they are not changing the body style to suite the I4, you'd think they could save a ton on I4 R&D by leaving the v6 in there...

 

I think it's mainly about the loss of the Ford built AJ126 and AJ133 engines in the next year or two, so JLR have no choice but to find at least two replacements.
They have invested $billions in the new Ingenium, which so far only comes as an I4, although I understand an I6 is not far away.
So putting two and two together, it makes sense to ease in an Ingenium I4 replacement for the base V6 with some overlap before the V6 goes the way of the Dodo.
