So I picked up a 1989 XJ12, Series III, Canadian Spec last month. 118km, really beautiful, pretty good shape. But the paint was tired and a lot needed to be corrected. I tried on my own with some cutting and polishing, but I discovered I was better with a wrench than an orbiter.

So I looked around locally to find a detail shop. Lots of options, but then I found Jimmy Jag just up the road. A Jag guy, that sounds promising! So I met him, we discussed it, and he promised me spectacular results for a good price. He put a lot of hours into it, and the results speak for themselves.

Thanks for the comments! Now I've got a lot of little things to sort out, but key thing is I can drive it and enjoy it, and if I may say so, look mighty good while doing so.

Cutting, polishing, and wet sanding a few spots. It wasn't terrible when I brought it in, but there were some spots like gas stains and duct tape marks (?) that needed a lot of work.

Yeah, Jim sells affordable cars, and sometimes some classics. But he advertised their detailing service on his site, so I thought I'd give it a try, glad I did.

Nice thing about Jim was that he was as thrilled as I was about how it turned out. He really appreciates and knows the car. He spotted a little problem with the back seats that I missed... can anyone else spot it?

Jim even offered me a nice profit on my $4000 saloon , but I'm going to drive it and enjoy it for hopefully a good while.

No picnic tables? I have another guess but trying to limit one per customer

 

No picnic tables because the front (and rear) seats are not VDP. I wonder if this was factory among some of the Canadian V12 VDPs or if they were replaced. Standard seats are more comfortable IMO, but of course lack the picnic trays. The door panels are VDP, as expected.

I think the front seats, without picnics, are correct. The Canadian XJ12's are definitely all VDP's, so I'm guessing some came without picnics.

Problem is the rears are a different tint, just a hint of green, not the "biscuit" (I think that's the code) of the rest. So they were replaced at some point in the car's history.

My detail guy offered to dye them, but I'm going to wait, maybe find some originals.

I didn't notice the rear seat. Yes, it's a different colour, and not VDP (which had a pair of bucket seats). The door panels, console and front seats look to be one of the standard VDP colours, Doeskin (code AEE). It's rare to see Doeskin seats that aren't VDP, but you have them. So yes, maybe a feature of the VDP V12s that differed from the earlier S3 VDPs. It's easy to dye the rear seat BTW.

And I just realized that a "senior moment" occurred during my previous post. It's the Series 4 VDP seats that resurrected the picnic trays last seen on the 420G. Series 3 VDP front seats were different but lacked picnic tables, same as the regular seats.
